I just finished playing the 5150 Block Letter for about 2 hours through the 5150 Sheffield cab, and I have to agree with you. I had tried my 5150 with all my cabs, but never with this one. It sounds significantly better than the 2X12 with V30s. The Sheffield speakers seem to tame the sizzle from the 5150, and have more bottom end and low mids than the V30s.

      Depends on where you're looking.
Plenty of trash unfairly spoken about Sheffields, and not just at TGP...

To my ears the closest sounding cab to a 5150 4 x 12 loaded with model 1200 Sheffields (thats what mine has) is a Mesa Boogie 4 x 12 loaded with stock black shadows. I would say they are almost identical. I have both.

Since we are on this subject.
Since the Cygnus amps are tuned to, and sound best with the 5150 cab then
what other popular speakers are most similar to the Model 1200's?
              Besides the Black Shadows.

              Greenbacks?

I know the Cygnus 7 also sounds great with a single G12M70 in the only combo
I have made for it, my own personal amp.
Seems people talk the same trash about that speaker as they do Sheffields.

I know the Cygnus 7 also sounds great with a single G12M75 in the only combo

Celestion 70w I think its called the GM70. Very close to the Black Shadow and the Sheffield. Not papery or sizzly sounding like the V30's which I don't like at all.

Yes, that's the common report I get back.
V30's sound like shitz with the Cygnus design, no matter what the wattage.
I guess the Greenback and clones are the best bet.

I'd love to have a multitude of speakers and cabs to be able to answer the questions.
'67 2x12 Fender Bassman cab, the 4x12 5150, a 2x12 Kustom and the single 12 combo are my only options for now.
I'm not even going to try the old Hepner or Rola's...I save those for the Spitfire (razz...)

I've played them through Mesa cabs and vintage Marshalls, but was never sure of what speakers were in them
                  at the time.
Actually sounded worse to my ears though the basket weave original Marshall.

                  Correction, that's a G12M70 in my combo, not a 75.

Nothing except more screws. Those cabs fart from bass pressures and fall apart unless you reinforce them. Mine had weather stripping and deck screws added. Casters are junk too.

I ran my Solo Single Rec into a Peavey 4x12 with Sheffields. I LOVED the tone I got from it. -Lou

My 5150 has extra screws and extra heavy duty casters. After those super cheap upgrades the cab hasn't given me an inch of trouble since I bought it new about 10-12 years ago... maybe longer. I record with it and gig with it every weekend.

I agree. Once you tighten them up and put some decent wheels on them, they are huge sounding.

The center post on my 5150 cab has a felt piece on the end but was not secured.
One decking screw in the center solved the whole problem.
                            I also reinforced the casters.

But for $160.00 I wasn't going to complain.

OK, guys, I picked up the cab tonight - it does in fact have Sheffield 1200s! Tried it through a 6505+ at the store and sounded tits! I got the rig put together here in my home office and ran it using my newest Jackson, a Y2KV. Did not get a chance to crank it, but what I heard sounded good! Also tried the rig through my also newly acquired Morley Bad Horsie!

Thanks to all who helped in this thread!
