  • What am I hearing?

I'm an avid Randall MTS user but I'm just not getting the tone I want and I have 21 modded preamps . I'm looking for something that has a sound that's in between a Vox AC30, Mesa Mark IV and Soldano SLO. I'd like something slightly dark but with a searing top. I', also looking for something that's not muddy of fuzzy sounding. I'm also looking for more of an overdriven sound and less crunch. I'm not sure what kind of amp to even start looking at. Is there anything that comes to mind you can recommend for this type of sound?

Tried EL84+YJ in your RM100 Ross?

I personally think with 21 mods in your arsenal, perhaps looking at tubes or speaker might be the way to go

Sounds to me that you need to shift your focus on your cabinet and speaker selection. Maybe something like a Mesa Boogie Half Back which is a 4 x 12 that is half open and half closed.

      Also an x pattern 4 x 12 running Vin 30's and T75's.

another thought, if you had spent the money you spent on those 21 modules, you could own an SLO, Mark IV, and AC 30, and have a lot less stuff laying around

True, but now he has 21 different amps for the price of 4 expensive ones without the need for a guitar/amp/cab switcher and the neccessary realestate to stack those amps

I have a similar issue in that the RM100LB I picked up a short while ago is fun, but I still love my DSL100.

I have 10 modules (2 Grails), but no mod'ed modules yet.

Yea, but Then I'd try to replace my CCV module with a real Cameron which would set me back $3k, $2k for my VHT GP3 clone, $2500 for my CAE 3+SE clone, $2K for my Shiva Clone and then I'd want to by a VH4 for the hell of it and I'd have no money to eat of pay for living expenses.

No, I haven't. I have 3 RM100's. One has EL34's, one has 6L6's and the last one has 6a7's. I use 2 different cabs, an EVH 4x12 with Celestion Heritage EVH speakers and a Randall 2x12 w/ Celestion G12t-75 speakers.

I should also mention, that I absolutley hate the FX loops on my amps. they suck!

Wow, I've never really heard people complain about the loops on the Randalls. I hear lots of bad about older Mesa Boogies, but never the Randalls.

It sounds like you need an Axe-Fx or Kemper to me if you want those different tones out of one box. Or possibly new fingers.

I don't think they sound bad. But they're just so frikkin' HOT! I used to run all kinds of stomps in the loop but with the Randall, everything has to be line level. And even some line level gear can distort if you run your module volumes too high. So anything going in the loop has to have loads of headroom

+1. As long as you have line level stuff you are fine. It wouldn't be too much work to add either a push button like my Marshall has or a volume knob.

I like the idea that this amp has both a series and parallel effects loop. Pretty flexible.

I liked that idea with mine as well, but I just never use the parallel loop. All my time based effects that I would use there have their own mix controls anyways, so into the serial loop they go.

I agree with almost everything said here, but especially looking at speakers. I liked what I was getting from my RM100 but something always seemed "off". I put V30s and G12T75s in an X poattern in my older Carvin slant and it was a great sounding difference. Now I can get warm and chimey cleans, smooth OD, crunch, and over the top saturated high gain anytime I want. All the tones I want.. Marshall (59RR), Mesa (Erect), 5150 (Trilogy), compressed high gain (1086), and clean with tons of headroom (KH1). Some need my EQ on (in the series loop). What else are you running in loops or out front?
