  • Full stack cable question???

Hey Dudes how's it going? I was wondering about the Cable set-up when you run a full stack. My Randall RG100ES Head has 2 Sp/Outputs should you run (1) cable from (1) Output on the Head to the Input of the Top Cab & the other Output from the Head to the Input on the bottom Cab? Or do you run (1) cable from the Output of the Head to the Input of the Top Cab & then from the Output of the Top Cab run a cable to the Input of the Bottom Cab?? LOL! Both of my Randall 4x12 Cabs are 8 OHMS each. Just checking to see which way you Dudes run them! Thanks for any Info/Help! Take It Easy & Thanks! \m/

Both of those speaker inputs are labeled 8 ohm. If you run one cab into the other then that brings the impedance to 4 ohms, so you would be plugging a 4 ohm load into an input that's looking for 8. Usually, each input taps the transformer for the correct load, using one it runs at 8 and using both it runs at 4. So since each cab is 8 ohm, I would suggest you plug one cab into each.

Is that a solid state head? If a tube head. Run each speaker into the head independently and switch the amp to 4 ohm. If solid state, do the same thing and plug and play. On tube amps, 2 8-ohm cabs = 4 ohm load. I think that head is a solid state though with the inputs into the head already marked 8 ohm each and made for 8 ohm cabs.

The head unit says 4 ohms and the cabs are 8 ohms a piece. Run one wire out of the head unit to the first cab. Then run another wire from the head unit to the other cab. When it comes to ohms two 8 ohm cabs will be a perfect match for a 4 ohm head unit. 8 & 8 make 4, 16 & 16 make 8, I know it sounds crazy but that's how ohms work. Just like PLON said each cabinet should have it's own individual speaker cable coming from the head and going to the cab.
This is what I think of Gibson since 1993. I HATE BEING LEFT HANDED! I rock out to Baby metal because Wilkinsi said I can't listen to Rick Astley anymore.

That's an RG 100 ES and it is solid state. I have the same head unit sitting in the basement. Slayer is exactly right on the ohms as well.

Killer stack though bro! Crank it up!!! Don't do what Straycat said either. That's not the proper way to run two cabs on that head unit. If the company intended you to daisy chain the cabs they wouldn't have put two speaker cab outputs on the head. If you plug two 8 ohm cabs into one single 8 ohm output you're going to fry the output transistor in that amp! That's the equivalent of putting a 4 ohm load into an 8 ohm output. When it comes to ohms you always want the cabinet to be higher than the ohms on the head unit or a perfect match. NEVER LOWER.

I know when it comes to OHMS IT CAN & DOES confuse many people out there! They usually will just not worry about it & plug in & start to jam & then BOOM! I really do appreciate the info from Everyone! I have the same head unit AXE DUDE has and the old slant Randall cab with the Jaguar speakers in mine. I have all Marshalls that I use now but seeing this thread makes me want to bust the old Randall out. I loved that thing. I can see in the pic that his bottom cab has the Jaguar logo but who knows what's in it. @Axe dude No problem bro happy to help out anyway I can and long live the metal!
