  • NEW "OLD" RANDALL AMP DAY.....AGAIN!! \m/

Hey Dudes hows it going? Happy New Year to everyone. Well I guess the Randall RG100ES Head & me just like to find each other & hang out! Along with some Killer "Wheeling & Dealing" I was able to do on my other RG100ES Heads & Cabs Etc adding this one to my Randall Gang was a "No Brainer" especially since there are not that many around (at least I have not seen many). If I told you what I got this Head & Cab for you wouldn't believe me anyway! lol! I had seen the Zebra Tolex version that Randall did for CC' back in the 80's but it's been awhile that I had seen one for sale on E-Bay/C/List Etc so when this one happened to be local I had to go & check it out. Also included with the Head was a 4x12 Peavey XXL Slant Cab. Here's where it gets kind of interesting....the Dude that had it for the past few years said the Head was cool NO issues & the Cab sounded Nice & "Heavy" overall some good Tone. I asked him what Speakers were in the Cab & he never opened it up to check since he got it. All he said was that it sounded great & it was L-O-U-D! Well come to find out only 2 of them were hooked up the whole time! LOL! Here's what I don't get the Randall Head has 2 (8 Ohm) Speaker Inputs. The 2 Speakers that are working are Peavey Blue Marvel (I believe these are 65-80 Watts each?)#70777144-16 Ohm Speakers. He has been playing it like this for years. If the Randall has 2 (8 Ohm) inputs is it cool to be running it the way it is? I mean I guess it is because he has been doing it for years with NO issues & the Head sounds fine. Now the other 2 Speakers in the Cab that are NOT hooked up are Crate (I believe these are 65-75 watts each?) #47-811-02 (8 Ohm) Speakers. I am not exactly a "Guru" when it comes to "Ohms" Etc I am doing some reading & learning more about Ohms to understand it better. So can the 2 (8 Ohm) Crates be hooked up to the 2 (16 Ohm) Peavey's & be able to work? I don't think the Crates can be hooked up to the Peaveys w/o causing some kind of damage..that's why I am asking. If this will work can someone draw me a Diagram or explain it to me? I sure would appreciate it! Either way to me it's some Killer gear & I am a Solid State Dude. 80's Randall Heads are Killer! I am just a "Ol'-Skool" M-E-T-A-L Dude! Any Help/Info would be great! Thanks again & check out the pics below. Take it easy & LONG LIVE THE M-E-T-A-L! \m/

Sup Axe! Two 16 ohm speakers together equals 8 ohms. Two 8 ohm speakers together equals 4 ohms. If you wire it all up in typical series Marshall style fashion you're looking at a 6 ohm load which will definitely fry the output transistors in the RG100ES because the lowest load the amp can take is 8 ohms per speaker output. I would suggest finding a friend or someone who would be willing to make a trade for two of the four speakers. Keep the set which is higher in quality.(In my opinion the blue Marvels are much better) Try to trade the crate speakers away for two other 16 ohm speakers or vice versa if you like the crates better trade the blue marvels away for two more 8 ohm speakers and then wire it up. I don't think it can be done any other way. Hope this helps! By the way you've got a killer set up going there bro!

Hey Brother how ya doing? Hope all is well. Happy New Year! Thanks for the compliment on my Rig it has taken awhile but I never thought I would have all Randall 80's Gear! I have been working pretty hard at the Randall Head Game lately & I have got very lucky with the "Deals" & Trading Etc. Thanks for the info! Guess that is why the previous owner left the 2 Crates "Un-Plugged" in fear of frying something. Tell ya what with just the 2 Peaveys it Cranks! LOL! It would be cool to find 2 more Peaveys & set the Cab up that way & be done with it. I will probably try to Sell or Trade the Crates. For the time being I will probably leave it chill for a bit. Thanks again Buddy! \m/

Yeah sell the Crate speakers for 20 bucks and put that toward finding two more Peavey speakers.
        Really? well screw Mark Twain.

Hey Dude forgot to ask you...as far as the Speakers go I do prefer the Peaveys over the Crates. Whats the main difference in the 8 Ohm to the 16 Ohm? More Power or ? I started to look & so far found some Peaveys on E-Bay same exact Speaker but there 8 Ohm! LOL! \m/

Hey Dude just wondering...do you have any experience with any Celestion G12-T75 Speakers? If so how do you think they would sound with these Peaveys? Better yet if this was your deal what 16 Ohm Speaker would you be wanting or looking for to try & put in with the Peaveys? Mainly for THE M-E-T-A-L! \m/

The G12-T75 is a really great speaker. I have 6 Marshall cabs and two of them have the G12-T75's in them. Marshall cabs come stock with G12-T75's. I've never had an issue with them at all. My other four cabs have different speakers in them. Two are set up with Vintage 30's and the last two have 25 watt greenbacks in them. I personally like the Vintage 30's for metal the best because they have really nice mids and bottom end. The Greenbacks are great speakers if you're looking for that old school Jimmy Page style tone but in my opinion they weren't designed for a ton of bottom end and super heavy distortion. They seem to do best with a moderate amount of gain. The G12-T75's are some killer speakers that you can play pretty much anything on. They're loud as hell and you have to turn the amp up a little bit to get them to moving considering they have a 75 watt power rating. They're ideal for metal and bottom ended heavy palm muted stuff and the highs are pretty nice on them as well. The best thing you can do is to try and find an exact match for the blue marvels in watts and ohms. It could be a pain in the ass if you want the exact same 'Blue Marvels" but I'd go with any good "Celestion" that was a match Ohms wise and it'll be good. Good luck bro!! \m/
