2 reasons why a large guitar rig doesn't bother you

well, i am not sure if my current rig would qualify as "large" by some people's standards (it is a 12 space rack and a 2x12 cab), but it is unweildy to move and transport in my cadillac STS....

reason #1 - the tonal options of having pedals, a rack processor, a tuner, my amp and all cables prepackaged and preprogrammed makes life SO much easier.

reason #2 - all the blinking lights on stage looks impressive and cool!!

Big rig days are over for me.

A Boss GT-8 and two Carvin SX3000 2x12 combo amps do the job nicely for me.
Bigger is not always better.

If so...

1. I take advantage of the two output speaker jacks, stereo switch on my cabinets and the impedance switch to really drive my head to it's maximum potential,
2. I just think it looks cool on stage,

I have been taking a 1x12 combo amp (65 pounds) and a 2x12 extension cab (around 40 pounds). Also, a Boss GT-10 into the effects return. I mic this with an SM57. But I have grown tired of the hauling and weight. So I have been experimenting at home with running direct. To do this, I put the mic'd amp/cab setup in another room and listen to it through my home P.A (to hear what front of house sounds like). Then I switch to using cab modeling and compare the two. I have the direct sound close enough that I'm about ready to try it for real in a live setting. Then all I will have to take is the GT-10, my guitars, and cables.

I took a 100w head, 2x12 cabinet, and a loaded 4-space rack to the gigs when I had a band. Granted we didn't play large venues, so the 2x12 was enough. The head gave the sound, the rack did the FX and switching (TSR12, switched with a GSP21 and matching footboard). Also had my MP-1 in there just in case the head's channels went wonky. I dunno if that's considered a "large" setup. My singer thought so (Mr Geetar-into-amp purist).

most of the time i use my 6 space rack (jmp1, power amp quadraverb), a 1x12 or 2x12, and my x3 on the floor for fx/wah/tuner/volume pedal. "Big" rig was same setup w/2 4x12s. That was actually fun... For one gig, lol.

As much as I love my rack and 2 4X12's for the tone and versatility I'm done packing it around.

As for tonal versatility, I, too, wanted the rack gear for that - Journey sounded like Neal Schon, Creedence sounded like Fogerty, Nugent sounded like Nuge, VH sounded like Ed, etc etc etc - at least guitar-tone-wise. The drums were always the same drums, the bass was always the same bass, and the vocals were always the same voice, so it made no sense for the guitar to have such a broad tonal variety.

yep, which is why with one of my cover bands I'm thinking about just bringing the pod x3live and go straight to p.a./monitor. 90% of the drunks wouldn't know the difference.

just because one doesn't gig today it does not mean they are not man enough to carry multiple heads and 4x12. I did when I gigged and no roadies. I'm in the same physical shape pushing 50 as I was at age 20. I'd still gig with at least 2 heads and 2 4x12's if I was out there tearing it up.
