Hey guys. I have read all the threads about the 5153. Most of them talk about the brutality and metal-ness of the amp. I am looking for some info about OTHER things it may be able to do. I am mainly inquiring about the 50 watt amp. The 100 watt is too large in dimension....
First off, let me say I recently joined an "outlaw country rock band" (whatever that is - it just reminds me of rock sung by a country singer). I am using strats and teles exclusively. I am currently using a Marshall JTM45 with a 1936 2x12 and a ton of pedals. The tone is great. What I am hoping to accomplish is to get a better clean tone, use fewer pedals, but still have gain options like I do now.
As a frame of reference I have the following amps already, and COULD use any of them - except I am looking at the 3 channel option.
* Rivera M60
* Rivera M100
* Rivera S120
* Eganter Tweaker 15
* Egnater Tweaker 40
* Marshall 3203
* Marshall JTM45
* Fender Tremolux
* Fender Princeton Reverb
* Fender Excelsior
A lot of the 2 channel amps get me close. The Riveras are really great overall, but I am having a hard time dialing in the type of OD I need for the fender guitars. they really don't seem like they are friendly. The Eganters are better, but have shared EQ so getting it "right" is a pain. The Marshalls really are getting it done quite nicely, but I am just wondering if there is something "better". Surprisingly, the Fenders leave me uninspired - there is always a weird high frequency that annoys me when using the OD pedals.....
So, regarding the EVH, what I am wondering is the following....
I played one the other day when I was testing guitars. I liked the overall tone, but didn't spend a lot of time on it. I did notice that there seemed to be an unbalanced volume jump between channel 1 & 2. From what I heard, that is where I would probably be doing most of my playing. I am looking to get a good clean with a medium OD for most of the songs, with an occasional "higher gain" setting for some faster, more aggressive leads.
How is the loop? Is it pedal friendly or would I need to dig out my rack processors? Either is fine - I am mostly curious about loop weaknesses.
Anybody use the MIDI switching? I have a GCX/Ground Control system that I use and being able to switch the head through MIDI is VERY attractive. It is one of the reasons I stopped using the Rivera amps. They are not compatible with switching systems unless you pay for Rivera to build you a custom MIDI interface box....
Ultimately, are the cleans good and fender, or are they sterile and wimpy? How about the crunch channel - will it give an AC/DC type of tone? The lead channel - can it sing without sounding overly compressed? Of the 3 channels, this was the one I cared for the least. it seemed very compressed.
Thanks for any insight.
