NAD...My first Mesa!

Snagged this off of Craigslist this weekend. Seller was waiting on some other guy who contacted him first and when he didn't show up when he was supposed to, I swooped in and grabbed it.
It is a Rocket 44 and is in great shape. The guy was moving and trying to lighten his load. He said he had it re-tubed a few years ago and there are about 10 hours on the tubes. My only concern is that it was plugged into the 4 ohm jack and the speaker is 8 ohm. Would this cause damage or just tone suckage?
I haven't gotten to play with it much but so far it works fine and I am really digging the tone just plugging in dry. Cleans are great and the lead channel with some gain really rocks.
It works well at low volumes and is one loud little mofo when cranked up. I can't wait to play around with this one and see what it will do. I am really interested to plug it into a closed back cab and see how it thumps.
Any tips or advice would be very much appreciated.

Hell yeah! Everybody should have some Boogie in the lineup and you have the perfect V to go with it!

You can plug an 8 ohm speaker into a 4 ohm jack on an amp. The load coming from your amp cannot exceed the speaker load in the cabinet, if you do that you'll cause damage, as for the tone getting thin it's hard to say. A lot depends on the brand and what year the gear was made.

I think the amp impedance being @ 4 ohms and the speaker being 8 ohms won't hurt it. When the output jack is 4 ohms that is the minimum you should plug in, yeah?
It is all nominal impedance anyway, right?

Nice one! I always wanted one of the little Rockets or Subway models. I used to have an F-30 combo which was pretty sweet.

From what I see this was a safe mismatch so no harm done.

From the Mesa site.

The speaker provides resistance to the output from the amp, rated by it’s impedance. The higher the impedance of the speaker, the more resistance it provides to the output of the amp – it impedes the output of the amp. This ultimately means that you get less output from the amp when the speaker is a higher impedance than the amp’s output.


This is safe for the amp because the amp is working less hard. The speaker is impeding the amp’s output MORE.

I still haven't had much time to play around with this thing but so far I like what I hear. I am thinking I need an EQ pedal.
