  • Help with noisy Crate amp

I picked up a Crate V33. Its an all tube 2 x 12 combo running 2 EL84's and 3 12AX7's. It has a high pitched whistle and some intermittent crackling in both "channels" (this amp is footswitchable but they really aren't separate channels). The whistle and noise is in the back ground. I have tried preamp tube swaps. The noise changes but it doesn't go away. With some preamp tube combinations I can get the footswitched gain "channel" to be dead quiet but the clean channel remains noisy. I have about 20 preamp tubes and I can't get the noise to go away. The EL84's are fresh JJ's. All the tubes appear to light up correctly and the amp works perfectly except for the noise.
    Any suggestions?
Also... if I plug into the effects return on the amp the noise is still there.

If you can get your hands on another set of power tubes to try I'd check it. Never had a problem with JJ's but a new power tube with a noise issue isn't really uncommon from any brand. Like I said, I'd check just to eliminate the possibility.

Sounds like tube oscillation... basically bad tube in the mix somewhere.
It's typically found in the preamp tubes but can happen in the power tubes as well.

Source another set of EL84's if you can. I've had bad ones right out of the box before. Rare, but does happen.

I replaced all the tubes and the noise remains. What else can I check?

When you had the tubes out, how did the sockets look? When you put tubes in were the pins snug or did they feel like they had some play?

always use the proper tool for the job...in this case it would be a sledge hammer LOL

if you replaced the tubes my guess is something on the power supply
