  • Randall RT503H Review...

Just picked up this minty fresh Randall head and 3 button footswitch. This is a 50w all tube head running 6L6's and 5 12AX7's. Its 3 channels. Clean, OD1 and OD2. Clean is well... clean. OD1 is voiced more like the British side of things. OD2 is more modern USA like a 5150. It has 3 separate EQ's too which is nice.
Spring reverb. 3 button switch is for all 3 channels. It has an effects loop and bias test points and trim pots on the back for super easy biasing. This amp will plug and play either EL34's or 6L6's with a minor bias adjustment (they give you a chart on what to bias it on depending on what tubes you choose).
The Master volume control has a very unusual taper. Its bedroom quiet up to around 5. It comes alive around 7 and it roars at 10. Very easy to dial in a good volume level because its not touchy like a Mesa or a Peavey 5150.

    How is the tone?

The cool thing about this amp is the gain structure between the channels.
Channel 1 can go from pristine clean to AC/DC classic rock tone with the gain dimed out.
Channel 2 starts off where Channel 1 leaves off and goes to full saturated Marshall type gain at around 7.
Channel 3 continues on the gain train but has a more modern heavy tone. Great for the heavy detuned palm muted stuff.

The reverb isn't overpowering and the effects loop is very user friendly for pedals or processors (it has a level button on it). This isn't a very loud amp so you can REALLY turn it up playing live.
It has cool blue LED's inside of it which make the amp glow blue when its on. Its also pretty quiet even with the gain way up.
It takes pedals on the front end very well. A nice Zakk Wylde ZW44 overdrive in front with the amp gain turned down just about nails that infamous No More Tears type tone.
Randall made this amp for a year in 2010 and discontinued it. They are very inexpensive now. Its a nice bang for the buck all tube amp. Its not the greatest amp I have ever heard but it is certainly gig worthy and would work very well at home because of the master volume control taper.
