  • Marshall DSL5C

I had a Blackstar HT20C which I really loved the sound of, but fuck me that thing was heavy. I tend to only play using my Line 6 Toneport/headphones into my PC so a big amp like that was really just overkill. It sat in a cupboard under a pile of stuff and was just too much hassle to lift out for a jam whenever I had a few minutes spare.
So I sold it. I already had a little Marshall MG15CD which saw more use than the Blackstar due to its size and heavier tones at low volumes so I decided to go for something of a similar size but all-valve.
    Here it is.
I've been trying to sell the MG15 for practically nothing but no one's interested so I'll probably keep it for one of my kids to use when they're old enough. It sounds kickass with the Blackstar HT-DistX pedal anyway!

Just for fun, here's the rig I had 5 years ago. Again, same deal, it all sat in a cupboard and when I DID pull it out for a quick jam it sounded amazing but WAAAAY too big for playing in a house!
Why do we get carried away and need the biggest fucking amps we can fit in a room when a 5/1W valve amp is so much more practical!?

I've only had a chance to play the DSL5 at low volumes but it's already impressed me. I A/B'ed it with the MG15 and it's night and day, as it should be. I'll get a chance to crank it tomorrow with any luck.

One of my favourite albums ever, Tull's Crest of a Knave, was recorded using a bank of low wattage Marshalls back in 85 or so. I have no idea what they were but it would be nice to know. I always got the impression they were more MG than DSL or even AVT.

Is that a PS4? I had one. It's the guitar I regret selling the most and wished I still owned it. The neck was amazing.

Yeah that looks cool. Mine is the pre-cursor - JDR94 Concept. Brilliant guitar and it cost me buttons! I have it setup in Drop B now.

Oh and the amp Martin Barre used on Crest of a Knave was, it seems a Studio 15 which is nothing like an MG! He had 6 wired up for Tull gigs.

Yeah the PC-1 is awesome! To be honest the markers on the top of the neck stop you from getting lost IF you remember not to look at the fretboard when you're playing.

Yeah. I'd get used to it. That was the only reason I didn't buy one. So I ordered the '95 SD-1 and SD-III instead. They kinda look like those with dots...

It played/looks amazing, and always grabbed it at the time...freaking dots.. I LOVE the clean look without dots. But I need dots...dammit!
