component question on my Laney AOR100

If you look closely you will see a gray cable connecting from the line in jack on the rear of the amp (this would be referred to as the effects loop in) and connecting to the Preamp Volume pot on the front of the amp. Every Laney AOR that I have seen a picture of has this cable.
On my amp... it was cut for some reason. Also... my impedance selector switch was removed and replaced with a speaker jack.

What I need to know is what is this gray cable for?

Time to bust out a schematic and talk to a tech? Obviously yours has been modded in some way ?

Looks like the bigger grey cables in there contain a hot and ground, but that's about as far as I can see above what you already mentioned.

Unfortunately... the only schematic available for my Series 1 AOR100 is the one shown on the link above and its blurry and not legible.

Maybe you could Google for AOR100 mods and see if one involved replacing the impedance switch with a speaker jack? I could see this as being one big mod or two separate ones.

I'm guessing it is a shielded (for low noise) line in cable.

I am throwing in the towel on this amp. I went over every component. I checked every wire. I swapped every tube. I replaced or repaired any wire that didn't look good. I cleaned all the pots. I don't see anything wrong. When I turn the amp on and flick it off of standby it starts to crackle after about 15 seconds. The crackling gets louder and then it starts popping. It doesn't matter if there is a guitar plugged in. The crackling and popping is not effected by any of the volume or preamp controls. When I pull the plug on the amp it continues to crackle and pop out of the speaker until it fades out.
There must be some kind of components failure when it heats up. I really wanted to try and repair this one myself. The local repair shop is very slow and very expensive (although.. very very good).
