I may have asked this on the old board, I can't remember, and plus-I still don't have a grasp on the concept. But anyway, can anyone explain what a variac does? I think its a device that creates tube saturation at lower gain settings, is that sorta correct?

If you are talking about the device that EVH used to use, it controlled the voltage (?) of the current that he would run his amp at. -

Yeah, it's a LARGE Variable transformer, that goes from 0-140 or so volts...
Some guys run their tube amps in the 80 volt area to get a hotter sound. But, that is quite hard on the amp components and tubes in particular...
As voltage drops, they draw higher amperage. You'll go through tubes a LOT more, I heard EVH got about a week out of a set, and weak components will often fail.
DO NOT use a variac on solid state stuff. It will blow fuses and fry components sometimes. That's why stuff blows up during brownouts....
