Tell me everything you know about Power Attenuators

Specifically the THD Hotplate, and how much does one go for? Im considering that being my next purchase after I buy my DSL. Or is there nothing to it besides it makes an amp get the cranked tone at low volumes?

to get the full tone from a tube amp it needs to be played close to full volume, but obviously thats impractical for home use so a power attenuator allows you to get the full tone from the amp at low volumes.

I may be completely wrong, but I'm pretty sure thats how it works

To say that a THD will allow you to get cranked tone at low volumes is a bit of a stretch. You can get cranked tone at LOWER volumes, but it is generally still loud.

I used my THD with a Fender Twin and it made it manageable in a townhouse. However, if you really decrease the volume that much with any attenuator, it does affect the tone. The fact is that you are not putting as much current to your speakers, so tone is affected.

That being said, I HIGHLY recommend the THD. I used one and I really liked it. Just don't expect good tone at bedroom volumes with a 4x12!!!

Also, if you can get a Marshall SE-100 (I think) attenuator, they are really decent also. Mine was pretty darn cool. Wish I'd never sold it...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">DOH! haha no I play in my bedroom all the time and I get some good tones, I just dont play at 'bedroom volumes' I aint affraid to wake up the damn neighborhood.

Yeah you guys have basically answered my qts.

One more qt, what makes the THD so better than the rest? Especially the Marshall all I hear is crap about the powerbrake.
