Re: VHT vs Bogner vs Diezel

it's like everything else - once you go past a certain price point, you may pay twice as much $ for an amp that is 10% better. Another thing to beware of is hype - I think some amps are artifically high, just to keep them 'exclusive' and lets face it, how many people here, if they spent $3k on an amp, would say "It sucks!"? Most people would convince themselves that it's a pretty decent amp. Not saying anyone here has crappy expensive gear, but I'm sure some of you can relate. The 1k used price point has some AWESOME amps that fall around there - you can really get your moneys worth used within a few hundred bucks of a grand, imho.

the point i was trying to make though, was that with the advent of the internet, as well as places like these where all kinds of people who are into these things from all over can congregate in one place, that this has in itself raised the bar. Whereas before you'd have to scour the country or dig around to find out about a Diezel or Bogner amp, now they're right here, just a click away. also something to think about, is over on the other side of the ocean where these amps are actually made, they're much cheaper. Diezels are like 2*** I think maybe 3. Just as Mesas overseas cost and arm and a leg to the european folk.

Okla...you've got a point there. It's not easy to want to admit to yourself (especially if you can't get a refund) that you just bought something that cost a lot of money, but don't really love it...or even like it.

I heard one "sad but true" story along those lines, where I was proud of the guy for admitting he'd spent a lot on something but still didn't get what he considered best for his money. Guy at NAMM told me he'd lost everything in the Sept 11th attacks...his gear was all up in one of the buildings and he was on his way there to get it when a plane slammed into the building. He then managed to pull it together and realize he needed to somehow buy an amp and get out there and make money. Well...he got a Bogner Uberschall--pretty darn expensive amp, no doubt! But there he was, over in the Diezel booth, poor guy, had to admit to himself while he liked the Uber, and I think he was still paying for it...he really wished he could have got the Diezel, after trying it out. Takes guts to admit something like that, yaknow?

Then, sometimes (and I've experienced this personally) a person might actually HAVE a good piece of gear, but not really know it. Maybe they ditch the amp, when if they'd only tried a $100 EQ on it, they'd have gone from "so-so" with it to completely loving it. But it's hard to want to go through all the motions to try to find out, it's easier to just want and expect, to find an amp that'll be just perfect as-is. The sad thing, though, is, really...for what some of us want to HEAR from an amp/setup...there's not really one amp head, combo, or preamp that, alone, will give them that sound. I think most people want or would want something that has a more complex sound than what they're used to hearing from just an amp by itself...but a lot of them might not ever try. It's kind of the same as never trying different brands or models of amps...getting stuck on one, when, really, if you'd have tried something else, you might really like it a lot better. But, of course, there's always bliss in ignorance and, in the end, as long as the person likes what they have and THINKS it's great, that's all that matters.

rockyourfacein, that's a good point, too. 10 years ago, I personally couldn't have tried out or really heard any amps but Marshall, Mesa, Peavey and Fender without having to travel at least 100 miles. Well, not counting Carvin hehe... Location and availability can make a huge impact on what someone will buy. Sure, maybe they could get a Guitar Player magazine and find stores that carry other stuff, then order it over the phone...but that's a BIG leap of faith to take. And people tend to stick with what they're familiar with anyway, so it made it that much harder for any small time company to get anywhere. Same with guitars. But now, with the Internet...boy, everything's exploded! You can go onto boards like this and hear about people using all sorts of different gear...go onto Harmony Central and read hundreds of reviews on different pieces of gear you might be curious about...even go to specific websites for companies and browse, go to their specific message boards, and email them, all from just sitting at home! I tell ya, years ago I'd have sure LOVED to have the Internet...might have helped me skip a lot of crapola gear and find stuff that was better from get get-go hehehe.

those last few posts really made me think about the fender rock pro. for 400 bucks new, its got a damn good sound. my lead guitarist uses one live. i have a boogie mk3, and sometimes the rock pro just sounds better, and at half the cost (and wieght hehheh) and thats realy hard to admit cause i love boogie and marshall and tube amps, and its a solid state with 1 12ax7. but damn it sounds sweet. the combo does sound bad actually, but the head with a good cab, just sounds great!
i know your laughing, and i would have been too, but i'm freaking serious.
