I can think of several amps offhand in the same price range that will blow the doors off the crate, imho... but check one out, and if you dig it, buy it, play it and enjoy it.

I played a Blue Voodoo, and a 5150 side by side when I was up in Portland. The 5150 blew it away, and it was very "used". I could never get a decent tone out of tghe BV, the Peavey was spot on for my type of playing. (It hid a lot more of my mistakes!)

I've played a Blue Voodoo combo a few times, and it sounds very buzzy and slushy.

StuTDavis Owned one for awhile, and if I recall correctly it had some characteristics he likes, and he hates head's/combo's with a passion haha.

The Blue Voodoo's Sounds pretty good but lack a bit of bottom end. The BV60 has virtualy no bottom end and is hissy. The BV120 has more bottom and but you gotta crank it farther to get the tone. I havent heard the 300 watter yet. But you never when one will come in at work.
For the money I would save a few more bucks and go for a Marshall DSL.

I'd probably stay away from the Blue Voodoo then. I really think it's difficult to find an amp that suits my purposes, I've checked out a Mesa Mark IV (to pricy) and some Marshalls (I'm gonna check out some more of them), but don't really know what to buy. A major problem for me is that I can't test all of the amps if I'm going to buy one, since alot of the sellers live in another part of the country.

Re: Info wanted about Crate Blue Voodoo

My bud "Marshall tone" is right, I did own a BV120 for a while. I was using it and a VHT PitBull 50/CL each going into a side of a stereo 4x12...both gains maxed, pushing them with distortion up front, and a BBE in the loops.

The BV120 is very much a "thrash metal" kinda amp. It likes to sound thrashy, likes to sound fuzzy and buzzy, which turns a lot of people off. I personally am not typically an amp head kinda guy, and, at the time, I hadn't really played any other amp that "by itself" had a sound closer to what I liked than the Crate, at the low-volume levels I play. Amps are generally getting much better these days, though and, especially if you can afford more $$, you can probably find something better with no problem. But, for the $$, stick a pedal in front and an EQ and/or BBE in there, and you can have a pretty cool sound...if you go for the thrashy stuff like I do. My main problem was, I couldn't get anything but that one sound out of that setup--it was completely NOT versatile for goofing with the different sounds I like to mess with...so I chucked it and have been a rack guy ever since. Re: Info wanted about Crate Blue Voodoo

I had the Red Voodoo for about a week. It's the same as the blue. It sounded pretty good in the store, but after having it a coulple of days , I hated it.

It's not versatile, as mentioned above, When you turned the gain down it sounded horrible, and it also made a terrible pop when switching channels.

The clean channel was terribly bright also. So, I did what Sid mentioned above. Luckily my freind works at the music store and I got a DSL50 for only 100.00 more.

                        Stu -

you used a distortion pedal or effect in front of a VHT 50/CL? *WHY*? Holy cow, I think that thing must have had bad tubes or missing parts or something... that's the last thing I'd figure a 50/CL would need.

Re: Info wanted about Crate Blue Voodoo

                          Pete,

Hehehe...Stevie Fryette said the same thing, amazed him that I didn't think the 50/CL had enough guts for me. Part of the issue was sound, part of the issue was feel. In terms of sound, I'd describe what I go for as "obnoxiously thrashy"--ridiculously gain'd out kind of sound, with hammer-hard tightness. In terms of feel, I want the most sensitive, reactive situation, and generally with my setup, a palm-muted E string sounds almost exactly like a palm-muted E chord, and high-pitched nasty harmonics fly out with ease. That's how I like my setup to be. On its own, the 50/CL, to me, had a good "core sound and feel", in the reason I bought it...the VHT clarity and crispness...but at the volume I play, I could only describe the sound from the VHT as "hot-rodded blues, but clearer". And, while the VHT was more reactive than a lot of other amps, it wasn't at the point I wanted it. I'm a picky SOB, very admittedly, and a lot of people probably don't/wouldn't like my sound.

But, yeah, I was pushing a completely gain-maxed 50/CL in the front with a Korg AX1000G on its "metal" (Metal Zone emulation) setting WITH the Korg's cab sim engaged as well. I've always done that with those types of units, regardless of the fact I'm using a real cab. Just like with my current rack setup...pushing the front end of the tube-based preamp with some juice to get it to go into my territory.

This is the sort of thing people don't realize... People say "oh this thing has more gain than you'll ever need". Not true for everyone. Maybe true for the person making that comment, but not for everyone. And the very reason I throw myself in front of the moving train when I see comments like that...becuase too many people don't realize...it's all based on the individual player's expectations and interpretation. Not what anyone else "thinks". Opinions of others can be valuable, but they are in no way definite truths for everyone, and just because someone doesn't agree with one person--or even a majority of people--on the qualities of an amp, doesn't make that one person wrong, stupid, or tone-deaf. There are very few solid definites that will hold true for everyone in this field.

True, that just amazes me... I ran the gain on my lead channel at about 12 oclock straight up, and the amp wasn't cranked much - maybe 7-8 oclock on the master if that. Anything more, and the amp was just too much gain...

But hey, whatever works for ya!
