Re: What\'s your "secret weapon"?

Gosh you guys' replies are even more mudane than my own - is it possible all you need is a nice axe with a great tube amp?

FWIW - my secret weapon is pretty stupid really but it is really integral to my style. In search of the sturdiest picks I could find, a friend of mine bought me some 1mm stainless steel Pickboy picks as a joke.

They actually really worked for me and now are part of my style - kind of a Billy Gibbons vibe - with just enough of that "chirp" on the strings to sound different. When I play with nylons, it just ain't the same.

This is no matter what amp I amp using - but my main amp is a Bogner Fish pre into a Groove Tubes Dual 75 stereo power amp with KT88's.

Thanks for the replies guys! Keep 'em comin'!

My secret weapon is my wah. Crybaby rackmount wah. Best wah Ive ever heard, man I love it. But I am not with you guys on the Duncan Custom. I have one in one of my guitars and it just doesnt have the tone - more fizzy than crunchy compared to my other guitars with EMG's or JB's. What gives on the Duncan Custom? It is a single vol guitar (no tone pot), maybe I need to add a cap or somethin?

Well tested and selected tubes! They make your amp come alive. Like John would say, my 3+ sounded like ass! But that was until I found the right tubes that woke it right the hell up. I have a few different brands and types of pickups as well. I'm with Chuck. The Duncan Custom is the best pickup I have ever played. I'm debating throwing one in my SL1 and losing the JB. To me the Custom gives you a high output pickup that can maintain a crystal clear tone. Me likes.

My secret weapon (in my mind ) is probably my mxr phase 90. I use it very sparsly and it kinda gives me that early EVH vibe for solos.

                        My secret weapon?

Play the heaviest, fastest songs ya got for the first three in your set. Everyone is too stunned after that to evne notice anything else...

Seriously, my secret weapon: The Duncan JB. Something about my playing style and that pickup just works - I have yet to not get a good tone out of a guitar that has one.

I second the two reasons above:

Talent and JB model pickups DO help quite a bit. LOL.

Although.....wow, I DID specify, in no uncertain terms, that ability, technique and related ARE NOT the point of this thread.

It's to point out a piece of gear you cannot live without that makes your sound different.

Yngwie has scads of talent and couldn't write a memorable SONG to save his life. Go ahead and flame me all you want - if the best thing you've got on the table for a good song is " I Am A Viking", I have forgotten you before dinner. Don't get me wrong - I love Yngwie and his playing but I am a guitar player, too. Do I like to listen to "Coming Bach"? Yes, I do. Is it anything more than scalular masturbation? No.

I wouldn't even bother with a "who's talent is best" thread - it's not worth it. However, a piece of gear integral to your sound is something that can be stated without argument.

Talent ratings are simply opinion but a piece of equipment you value is a FACT.

BTW, if I sound kind of stern about this, it's because I started this topic to have fun and we're veering off track.

My "secret" weapon is a Fulltone Fatboost and an old Boss GE7 eq pedal that I use to drive my preamp- The GE7 really gives me "my sound" and the Fatboost makes it bigger- Neddi
