If you got it for free, take it to a tech. It's not like you're going to be out a huge amount for a repair, most likely.

You put a 3A fuse where a 1A went. No offense, but I wouldn't even let you carry one of my amps. Heck, you probably oughta let someone else plug yours into the wall just to be safe. You scare me.

Pete's a bit harsh in his delivery, but he's right. The fuse is there for a reason; to prevent other damage from occurring, to the user as well as the amp. If she's blowing fuses definitely
take her to a tech.

I got lucky with mine, because it was the
tube being loose and the dirty pot with it. Sorry you're not as lucky, but even
if you spend a little $ fixing it you're
way ahead of the game than buying one.

I tried a 3A fuse in it (f*ck knows why) and it buzzed and the amp chassis started smoking hehehe

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Good work with the fuse there Einstein... DOH!! Now, what was probably something simple, like an IC popped, has turned into some additional surrounding circuitry like resistors etc smoked and maybe other stuff like burnt traces on the board...

They use fuse specs for good reason... Stay with their specs. Doh!!!

So you reckon its even more f*cked now than it was? What do you reckon a ballpark figure will be for a repair?

Sorry if I came across as being harsh... but here's something to remember in the future:

If you don't know what you're doing inside an amp, Don't try to fix it yourself. It's likely you will just make it worse or hurt yourself.

When an amp is blowing fuses, be glad it's blowing fuses and not transformers or other expensive parts. About the only thing you really could have done with the 3A fuse is watch the guts to see where the smoke came from, but it's likely the smoke was a power transformer blowing or a resistor or IC burning up.

Seriously - take it to a tech. Most will provide an estimate for a bench fee, and it would be money well spent. Those are fun amps - not a VHT or Uberschall by any means, but they get a decent enough tone for solid state.

Smoke coming out of your amp means...

a) You are very close to ending your own life.

b) You are willing to risk burning your home to the ground, along with anyone you love and everything you possess - rather than spend a few bucks.

c) You have no respect for electricity or fire, making you a pending-statistic waiting for someplace to happen.

d) You need to re-read the details of the Great White niteclub tragedy, a textbook example of what happens when electricity, fire, and lack of respect/knowledge happen to be in the same room.

e) All of the above.

Sound harsh? Good.
We'd all like to keep you around a bit longer - OK?

The 3 Amp fuse probably did some damage. (Strictly a guess) One of your primary diodes went causing AC to be where only DC is allowed instantly blowing the 1 amp fuse (Like it is supposed to) Then you put a 3 amp fuse in there and allowed the AC back into where it shouldn't be casing a capacitor or resistor to start to overheat.

You think that's bad?! When I was a young, dumb kid in high school, I had this solid state Marshall 50watt 2x12 combo. It quit working on me one day, so me being the inquisitive type of guy that I am, I open the thing up. It was just a simple blown fuse, lucky me! I didn't happen to have a spare fuse kicking around, no license, no car, so I had heard that you could bridge the fuse terminals with tinfoil... Yep, I did this. I probably didn't even unplug it first. (I'm sure I did!) The amp worked just fine for the rest of the time I owned it. For all I know, it still has the tinfoil/fuse on it! You are lucky. 98% of the time a fuse blows, it's because of something inside the component rather than your outside power source.

Years ago one of my Marshall 1959s blew the mains fuse, and in a rush, a guy helping the band stuck some foil in the fuse hole and screwed the cap back on. Bye bye output transformer!

Yeah.
With hindsight it was stupid, but my original plan was to borrow a multimeter and go over every component and check them. But my mates done that now. I took it round to him this morning before college.
My mate (an electrician) was pretty happy to see it. When I took it to him he went "OOH! Valves and stuff!" Which amused me. From what he knows so far, theres some short circuits in it (but when I took the chassis out the amp a £1 coin fell out...) He reckons he can fix it, I'll know a bit more later.
Be thankful I didnt put tinfoil in or hardwire it like my other mate told me to!!!
Thanks for your concern though, Ill be more careful in future. Its just Ive never been one to take things to shops to get fixed (neither is my dad, which is where I get it from).
