• Does a 5150 need rack help?

Hey everyone,
I just bought a 5150 off eBay and am wondering about the tone and stuff. I know by experience that the 5150 has good tone by itself...But could a Rackmount EQ better the tone? I'm looking for something close to the Paul Gilbert/Brown sound. I know this thing can pump out the brown sound...But i think that would want to do a little scooping of mid's and add alittle bass to it. is it worth a rackmount?
Thanks!

As much as I hate to advocate the use of these things, haha, the BBE 422a seems to be enjoyed by the 5150 quite a bit. They're pretty cool in that application.

I would also LOUDLY say for you to get a Peavey 5150 Cabinet for that amp if you can. I've tried Mesa Cabs, Marshall/Ampeg Celestion cabs, and the 5150 cab has the tightest bass and allow the most gain to be use with that amp than any other cab I tried.

Whats the diffence between that and an EQ?
Would that be better than an EQ?
Or would this even work WITH an EQ?
Sorry, im really not rack smart...i just want some kick a$$ tone out of my 5150
Thanks again!

They have some slight simularities... But, You could use both, I have.

I was mighty happy with the BBE 422a's alone. But, did also use an Alesis PEQ-231 EQ in the rack for a bit with my 5150s (I ran two 5150s).

The 5150 cab made a big diff really by itself...

Also thanks on for the info for a cab... I've been thinking about that aswell. I'm thinking either what you said, a 5150...or a Marshall 1936 2x12...thanks

Cleveland is right , i have had a 5150 for a short while right before i got my VHT and i will say that a EQ will help and the 5150 cabs make a HUGE difference. Hey Cleveland do you like the band chimaria there from Cleveland and they use 5150's and sometimes mesa's but they play esp 7 strings with emg 707's. And also what kind of amp / setup do you use because i know your a big metal head like me

I think I can speak for Cleve here...No there's Rap in it

The bassist seems pretty good..that's about it ...not our style really

The BBE 422 0r 422a is a must for the 5150 ...like John advised
"Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"
Donnie Swanstrom 01/25/06..miss ya!

"Well, your friend would have Bell's Palsy, which is a facial paralysis, not "Balls Pelsy" like we're joking about here." Toejam's attempt at sensitivity.

The difference between one of the BBE Sonic Maximizers and a regular EQ is in the way the BBE processes the phase of the signal.

While the objective of a regular EQ is to alter the magnitudes of the frequency components but not necessarily the phase, the BBE people claim the found a 'magic formula' to treat the phase in such a way that you end up with a more likeable sound.

forgot to say...

EQ and Maximizer could work together and not be redundant in theory.

The only way to know if you like it is to go to the store and play around I guess...

They could work together...

And to answer Vanes Qs, Not a fan of Chimiara really. Some is OK, but they are to american nu metal for me....

Right now, I'm "basically running a Custom Audio Electronics CAE3+se preamp, intellifex, and a VHT 2150 into Ampeg /celestion cabs.

Re: Does a 5150 need rack help?

Do u need to go with a rack system?

I've found that if ur in need of a great rythem tone, look no further than a Boss Ge-7 EQ. This thing thru ur fx loop and it will ****ing rock. But a BBE is always cool too. U can grab ur self a nice little fx rack just to spice up ur lead (if u need to). I've been looking at fx processors to run thru my 5150 fx loop. If u plan on going with fx floorboards, don't go with any digitech stuff. digitech proccessors and Peavey 5150 should not belong in the same sentence.

BTW: These guys are total right about getting a matching 5150 cab with ur head. That head is specifically voiced for thoses Sheffield speakers. Mixing and matching the head and that 5150 cab with anything else will not produce the same crunch and tight bottom end as the 5150 hd/5150 cab comb.

BTW Part 2: EMGS. They rock thru that head too!

Btw Part 3 : EXHUMED! There Rythem guy uses a 5150 Live! Check these guys if ur looking for a brutal freaking tone (alot of these don't really answer ur questions but ... whatever)

BTW: Oh ****! Just read your post. ! This post won't help yah. Sorry

Thanks again...

Nah, that my basement and where the band practices. No wife, just a girlfriend currently. Much better than wifes, you can exchange girlfriends somewhat easier.

"Cool freaking rack dude... nice Voodu Valve right there!..."

Thanx, it sorta minimal compared to some here at the JCF, but does the trick.

I got the Voodu AFTER I had the Intellifex, and liked alot of the setting I'd programmed into the Intellifex, so it stayed. Then I bought the CAE3+se, and was glad I kept the Intellifex anyways.

Just like the CAE, I really just use the Voodu for it's cool distortion anyways. It also does some cool phase and flange effects that the Intellifex doesn't. I don't use much effects really other than echo and harmonies. I'm headed towrds a TC Electronics G Major soon to replace the Intellifex.
