• Need some quick advice.

Basically, I need to buy a new amp ASAP. I have about 400, 450 max to buy an amp, and would prefer to buy off ebay.

Could somebody point me in the direction of a nice amp in that price range, (preferably a combo)? I know the 5150 combo is right in that range, but I cant seem to find one on ebay for just that much.

Any help is always appreciated, and if you would like to find a direct link to something on ebay, feel free too !

Doh realize I forgot to post something.

Basically, for death metal type stuff. Ide prefer one for rehersal / recording and whatnot.

and in terms of features ? Uhhm, im not really educated much in this area. I just want to be able to plug in my drum machine, and my guitar at the same time.

Well I dont listen to Death Metal so I dont know what kinda of tone you want, but in that price range you can get a Marshall DSL 401 combo. I think maybe a Peavey XXX might work for you, but I have no idea what they cost.

Marshall Vavestates are popular for death metal musicians on a budget. But for $400 you might not get a rig that will be loud enough to play live. We really need to know what you are going to use it for to help best.

Saw a deathmetal band last weekend using a Randall solidstate of some sort. They were tight. Can you say MosH PIt.

Crate. Period. Maybe not. Randall might be a good choice though if you don't mind soild state. Maybe put a distortion pedal in front of it for some added WHUMP!! I'm kinda kicking around finding one of those - like an RH100 or 200 maybe. If nothing else, I can always run a POD in front of it and turn it into a Line6 HD!! Have too see about that though. 3 amps now, and I haven't been playing much. I'm using a Flextone XL, Rocktron Replitone, and a Sansamp PSA-1. But not for Death Metal - mostly 80's pop metal and some stuff like Alice in Chains.

I listen to DM and all the "more extreme" variants of metal.

@ Paddok:

The DSL combos atleast are NOT what you want. (Dunno about the heads)
They're prolly good for Jazz, Blues, Rock or some early Heavy Metal but in no way shape or form Death Metal.
You want high gain yes? I got the buzz of a swarm of bees. Thin or Muddy is your choice.
Anyhow, if you happen to see one to try out, by all means audition it.

Re: Need some quick advice.

I've been playing death metal for thousands and thousands of days, and I personally DON'T LIKE too much gain in my tone. By no means do I play clean, but I don't use as much distortion as you might think. Tons of distortion is fine if your playing stuff like Six Feet Under or Obituary, slow, loud stuff, but when you start playing stuff like Cryptopsy and Nile, the way-overdriven sounds that many amps can give you actually makes it sound worse. Too much distortion muddys the sound, and when you are riffing at 240+ bpm you lose a lot of your definition between notes, and you just sound like noise. The aggressive sound should come more from HOW you play the guitar as opposed to just turning your amp to "MELTDOWN".

there are so many ways to go about this weather it be head and cab or just combo. peavey is great stuff no matter what anyone says about them, and they are easy to get repaired by pretty much any pro technician. i used the renoun for years in a deathmetal band back in the early 90's when deathmetal was the hottest new sound in metal.

so building a peavey half stack sounds promising actually.

please any more information or ebay links are greatly appreaciated.

Question:
Wat model Peavey is this cab? I looked all through the Peavey on-line catalog but I couldn't find this cab anywhere? Is it discontinued or did I just not see it?

Well, that Triangle logo, I've only seen it on transtube and transformers series stuff. I thought that was all Combo amps... Never saw a cab of theirs with it on there. Assuredly NOT a 5150 cab unless the guy butchered it up...
