One of the best live sounds I had ever gotten was through a completely cranked 1x12 ampeg tube combo. Straight into the amp, no bull****. As long as there is a house PA, volume isn't necessary an issue. A big mistake I used to make when I first started playing live was meticulously EQing my sound to what I thought was the best, only to realize I was either squashing every other instrument in the band or not cutting through at all. Most of my gigs the 4x12 stayed at home in favor of the 2x12 and volume wasn't an issue unless there was no PA or an outside gig.
