• MIDI Experts, Help!... (Newc and company)

Guys, I am a complete donkey when it comes to Midi. I have a Roland Sound Canvas SC-88 sitting next to me here and I want to use my dr-5 to give commands to it just because the SC-88 has such geat sound quality!... do you think I will be able to just play all the songs on the DR-5 from the SC-88?...

Help!....

What exactly is the Sound Canvas? If it's a Sequencer, then you should be able to make it call the drum machine.
You need to connect the SC's MIDI Out to the DR's MIDI In (with a MIDI cable). The SC should already be set up from the factory to send out MIDI signals when a MIDI cable is connected (plug and play), and MIDI drums are always on Channel 10.
Set the DR-5 MIDI options to allow MIDI Program Changes (internal menu somewhere), as well as MIDI Clock In (this is the timing signal so the sequencer/synth can send tempo changes to the DR-5).
You will also need to run an audio out line from the DR-5, as this is not handled by the MIDI connection.

However, I don't think you will be able to make the DR-5 command the SC-88, as the SC-88 has the bigger brain, thus it has more commands, thus it is considered the Master in the MIDI chain.

Newc, my undestanduing is that the Sound Canvas is not a sequencer but just a sound bank that can be controlled from a sequencer. It has really high quality sounds!... I was thinking along the lines of using the DR-5 as the sequencer and the SC-88 as the sound module...

hmmm... I am looking right now and the sound canvas has no time stuff... it has to be given the time commands...

I will keep reading a bit more and think some more about your answer since I dont understand everything you say there...

Ok. Then you will probably have to make your PC command the SC-88.

You need one of these:
https://www.americanmusical.com/item...&item=EDI+UM1S

OR one of these:

https://www.americanmusical.com/item...em=THK+TW12MC1

To connect your computer to the DR-5 or SC-88.

Then you need two of these:

https://www.americanmusical.com/item...tem=CON+MIDI06

To connect the two units to each other.

Then you need a computer program that has MIDI instrument capabilities, such as Cakewalk or Guitar Pro.

Then you have to set the DR-5's and SC-88's internal settings (read the manuals) to accept MIDI Program Changes, and to receive MIDI Clock Data, which would be sent by the computer program.

Then you need to plug them both into your mixer or recorder or sound card or computer's Line In
(however you will be recording) so the sounds the produce will be recorded, since that is not handled by the MIDI cables.

Newc, too late, I already own this..

http://www.midiman.net/products/midiman/USB1x1.php

And have tons of Midi cables... and have a mixer where both Midi units connect and that is also hooked up to my sound card... I also have guitar tracks 2.0...

The problem starts when I get to do the programming... I am going to grab the manual now...
