• ADA MP-1 ?'s

I was browsing in one the local music stores, and they have a couple of ADA MP-1 preamps. I've been reading about these, and them seem to be very good for the 80's type metal that I like to play.

My questions:
To hook this up, I would have to run it into the effects return of my Line6 Flex II ? Can it be run like this ? Would the power amp being solid state make a big difference in sound ?

Also, what's the max that I should pay for one ?

Thanks

1) My opinion: Great piece of gear. Nice cleans. A little noisy on the for the distortions. Needs some help from external EQ units and a sonic maximizer.

Overall: good bang for the buck!...

2) The mp-1 does have an effects loop. Look the the manual here if you want to find out more:

mp-1 users' manual

3) The ada will run ok through your solid state but they get really sweet when you use them through a Mesa 20/20

4) Price: US$75-125 depending on condition. I have been watching them go on ebay for a couple of months and these things instead of going down go up!...

You might want to alternatively consider a peavey Rockmaster, which is a more serious piece of equipment that has been under valued for some reason...

Definitely need external EQ with an MP-1 unless you like pure "glass" tones.
I've run mine through a solid state power section (Fender RocPro1K head) and it sounds good enough for live situations.

Thanks guys. I was thinking about getting an external eq. Are the stompbox ones (like the Boss GE-7) any good ?

You actually like the Peavy Rockmaster? I wouldn't use that as a paperweight

I've yet to run into to MP-1s that sound exactly the same. Try before you buy...

Re: ADA MP-1 ?\'s

On EQs:

Yeah it works, I have both an ADA MP-1 and a Boss EQ-20. I have very limited experience with rack mounted EQs in my rig, but I suspect the pedal I use fills the same gap, one the MP-1 needs filled, thought not unreasonably so (hence why a 10 band eq is working for me). I only run the ADA to acheive that Iron Maiden/Blind Guardian tone, but it's a great preamp (so much so that I bypass my combo's (Mesa Tremoverb) preamp to run it sometimes). I just blew a 12ax7 out in the ADA, so I would recommend a back-up unit or tubes if this is your direction.

Overall, the Boss is a good deal, but the ADA is a better one (it really has great distortion and a usable chorus).

Later,

Never.... and I mean never..... use the effects loop in an MP-1. It is the tone sucker from hell. Put a lead in both jacks and you'll see.

Other than that, I love the MP-1. It may not be the best, but it IS the best for the price, IMHO.

Re: ADA MP-1 ?\'s

I stopped in another guitar store last night, and they just happened to have an MP-1. They wanted a whole $75 for it, so I grabbed it. It works great. The top and bottom are scratched from it being in a rack, but that's not a big deal.

I can get the Boss GE-7 around here, and I'm gonna check one other store to see what they have. I think I also need a noise supressor with this thing. It seems to have a lot of noise when not playing the guitar if I don't turn the volume on the guitar down.

Now I just gotta figure how to tweak the thing to get some good sounds from it.

Congrats!...

that is one good price... the nice thing is that even if you get sick of it you will be able to resell really easy...

The noise was expected... look into a hush unit or anything suggested in the thread on noise gates... The EQ will indeed help but like I said it is better to put one in front and one after.

Re: ADA MP-1 ?\'s

I would rather run two EQs out the back than one in the front. With frontal EQ, you risk overloading the input, or not getting enough signal to the preamp. Always start with the preamp. Everything else goes behind it.

I use the MP-1's FX loop with my TSR-12 and it sounds better even when the TSR is bypassed, IMO.

And yeah the MP is a noisy little bugger - another area good EQ helps - you can cut the ultra highs (14k-18k) and drop most of the hiss.

As for sounds, I've got a few you might like.
I'll get them typed up and posted

1) what are those sounds for?.. can you please describe them a little?..

2) why are you not using thr chorus on the mp-1?... I thought it sounded pretty decent...

I have more versatility by using the TSR-12's chorus, as I can use the same patches in the MP-1 and change the TSR's patches via MIDI to bring in the effects, rather than having 30 different MP-1 patches with and without different levels of Chorus effect.

As for the settings above and what they do - you'll hafta get an MP-1 and find out
