do these things have a lot of distortion, enough for a heavy metal sound and some death metal? I was gonna get a vht but i think it's outside of my price range.

I would think so. I have the gain on mine at 8.5 lead drive on 9 and it has plenty of distortion. My JCM 800 can't touch it.
Take the gain higher and the drive higher and it has to much for me. Throw a pedal in front and it will chainsaw. -

i think the mark IV is a great amp but......

as much as i love it i think it is one of the hardest amps to dial in the sound you want because it has too much to choose from and play with. granted you can tweak every little nuance it seems, but it ended up frustrating me. (i did find a great sound though. but i prefer an amp with less. i have a mark III (which i just sold) and i loved it, it was easier to dial in and sounded about the same. i just switched to the old .50 cal (el84 ver) and i love it. its not as loud but the mark 3 and 4 have to be too loud to sound good. seriously they are great amps but they have to be cranked to push the tubes properly. 50 watts is more than any bar gig will ever need from a guitar amp.Comment
