theres one of these at a local store. its got brown tolex & a tweed like grill, looks more vintage than the black ones im used to seeing. anyway it sounds like JUNK, NO gain clean channel lacks a full tone range & sounds really thin. is this a good amp that needs tubes & some TLC, because its pretty cheap

I've never played one, but I've heard great things about Rivera. I'd think it would just need some new tubes and some TLC.I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling. -

That is a great amp and should have a ton of gain. I had the R30 which is that stripped down version of that. Also, by turning the gain up, is just the first step. There should also be two other pull out gain stages. If there is not enough gain when those two are pulled out, either there is something wrong with the amp...or you. You might need too much gain, but I can get pretty much any tones out of my Riveras. Besides, if you throw a boost in front of it like a Fulltone or TC Electronics, you can do anything.
