Neither, 800!!
Tsl should be better because its a tube amp.

The Mode 4 is like a glorified Valvestate (has a preamp tube, solid state power amp), the TSL is all tube with preamp and power amp tubes). I don't know about the newer Valvestates, but the old, original series from the early '90s were very good! The Valvestate will probably get you more drive/gain saturation for heavier music than the TSL.

Played em both, I liked the TSL... but Marshall's quality issues concern me. The Mode 4 was a giant Valvestate amp from hell. I didn't care much for it... didn't sound that great. If I wanted a solid state amp for metal, I'd get an OLD randall or the first version of the valvestate over it.

I think that the only reason people and drawn to the mode 4 is becuase of it's wattage. I've played through a Mode 4 half stack and wasn't pleased in the least. Now, the TSL's sound and tone is alittle better, but the quality is poor (as almost all Marshall's nowadays ). If you dig Marshall, go with a JCM800 from the 80's. They seem to be very relieable (esspecialy with a Drake in it), and are not to bad pricewise.

Re: Marshall Mode 4 vs. TSL 100

I checked one out last week and it sounded okay. I ran it at all volume levels through a mode four cab. It has a very Nu metal tone to it which is no surprise. It cant get the 800 sound that it claims it can. It is not worth the 2 grand for a half stack setup. Many better options out there for the $$$. I think you first have to decide what you are looking for in an amp. I like tubes. If you like tubes you will not like the moldspore errr mode four I mean

Who said that the Mode 4 could get an JCM800 tone?
