Re: Preamps?

    Bill,

HAHAHA!! Lawdy, man, that's some funny stuff, but damn sad, too. I dunno what I'd do if I'd have bought something that just completely blew up or...melted? That's some freaky stuff...hehe.

I first got into guitars in the mid-80s. I'm originally from a BFNowhere little town in South Carolina. Definitely know the thing where the guitar store had nothing but Fender, Gibson, and Marshall. Once I started driving, I found some better stores with the kicka$$ 80s custom painted Jacksons and ESPs, but when you're 16 you get to drool and that's about it hehehe. Crazy thing was, I always wanted to come to California and see all these cool guitar stores I read about, and I move out to CA, and there's hardly nothing now but Guitar Centers with generic crapola from Korea! Aye yi yi...

I WANTED so bad several years ago to get into guitar heads. But, yaknow, that stuff just didn't hack what I wanted at all high-gain-wise, being a home-player. Unless you can crank the things (or maybe have the attenuators?), those things just didn't seem to hack it for home use. They're getting better now, it seems. I played the Diezel amps and the Herbert sounded and felt great at even the lowest volumes. Awesome amp, with an awesome pricetag. Damn, I don't even think my whole rack cost me as much as that head. Err...scratch that...maybe it did...now I feel kinda sick...hehehe...

Her`s another nod for the Celestion Lead 80`s, they scream and keep their clarity, but Trace from Voodoo amps told me GT12-75`s were better for Speed Metal and the like, are they that much different, I am looking to get a cabinet with 4x 12 of one of those 2 I mentioned Jack.

Back in the day, I got a great Iommi sound out of nothing more than a Carvin X100B half stack with a ProCo Rat in front, using a Les Paul or a Soloist. That X100B didn't have much gain by itself, but it had tons of tone and was LOUD! Even the clean channel was cover-your-ears loud, as I demonstrated many times in my dorm room... I use a VHT Pittbull Classic 100 and it has gain to spare, but I am looking for that holy grail of cabinet/speaker combination Jack.

Yeah, I got a X100-B. It is crushingly loud for sure! I run an original Boss DS-1 from 1983(!) in the front and it's wicked! Oh wait, that my b/u rig. I dont play it much since I got a XTC.

If anybody wants the XB lemme know. EL-34 model - could use a new set 'o tubes, grey carpet, 5 band EQ on front panel, no footswitch.

                  Re: Preamps?

To jump back a bit, I just took a JMP-1 as a partial trade from a guy and I'm simply amazed at how good it does sound. It's a bit stiffer than a real-deal old Marshall (of course that's at several times the gain too), but it's not nearly as bad as any other JMP-1s I've tried. It's pretty dynamic too. He recently retubed it with EH 12AX7s, so that may be worth a try for anyone with this preamp. I don't know if that's the key, or if there's that much variation in the individual units.

SPAM: I took this one intending to sell it and I must. It's listed in the classified section. This post wasn't just an advertisement for mine. I really have been suprised at how good this preamp sounds.

My preamp of choice lately... Tech 21 SansAmp Tri-A.C. pedal. It's three programmable channels for Fender/Marshall/Mesa Boogie sounds. Its tone is awesome, and sometimes I even put a DOD Juice Box overdrive pedal in front of it for a more over-the-top boost. It works for me... plugged either straight into my amp or in its effects loop. And I play through a '92 Valvestate stereo chorus combo which in and of itself has a great sound. Gotta love those old Valvestates!
