Re: Age Old Question: Mesa or Marshall?

They didn't make a three-channel rackmount Recto - I'd have one if they did. I'm assuming both guys that mentioned this had three channel heads, and went back to the rackmount two channel versions.

Personally, I think you're both nuts - the three channel (at least the Triple, which is what I have) seems to me to have a much tighter bottom end, isn't quite as shrill, and you can get a better lead tone out of channel two than any older Recto. (The "raw" mode is pretty cool for recording, too.) The rackmount DOES sound better than the two channel head, though. Of course, that's my opinion - YMMV.

Yeah. I had a 3 channel Dual rectifier head and I went to a Racktifier. Dont get me wrong man..... The 3 channel head has awesome features and a kick a$$ tone. I prefered the tone of the Racktifier better for me.... It wasnt that the newer heads suck or anything. I just like the tone of the rackmount better.. My ears I guess. It also is better for me because i run a switching system and a rack draw with pedals and a rackmount dunlop wah so I got it all in one shockmount case as opposed to carrying around a head case and a rack.

I prefer the smoother sound of a Marshall.

The only way to satisfy the dilema of choosing between the Mesa and the Marshall is to give in and buy them both. Its a double rush getting both. The next dilema is deciding which one to keep if you have to sell one.

i think the jcm 800's sound pretty good with some mods, however it is a one trick pony.

i think the recto is a bit better for a wide range of music, but it is pricey.

the 5150s or even the xxx is pretty good bang for the buck.

have you looked into getting a hughes and kettner? their high end amps are pretty cool.

also i think the soldano sound is pretty cool too and the hr50+ usually go for the same price as a recto, if not less.
