hi guys, i was thinking of getting the 5150 or 5150 II head. but somehow, some reviews told me that the "clean" channel isn't that good after all. it sounded muddy or something. have not tested one yet. but if any of you guys had own one, is there any comments about it? i play mostly 80's metal and also shred stuff music. basically, need a good head after so mny years with my valvestate combo. also, i've heard that there is no reverb on the 5150 too. is there a way to "clears up" the clean channel in the 5150? alot haad been said about the 5150 crunch and lead channel. would kindly appreciate if someone can answer some of the questions. thanks alot guys!!!

Re: 5150 "Clean" Channel
ACTUALLY, guys...{and I am a HUGE FAN of the 5150s and Peavey amps in general}...IMHO - be it the RHYTHM channel or the LEAD channel {and I am running two 5150 4x12 cabs - a slant and a straight RIGHT OUT of the box}...The 5150s, the 5150 II's..AND the 5150 Combos ALLtend to sound a BIT..."DRY" to MY EARS...and NEED some HELP to REALLY "BROWN OUT"......
I think that the BEST THING you can DO...is run a BBE Sonic Maximizer {ANY of them} and a mono EQ in the effects loop...I PROBABLY own EIGHT BBE's, and ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE that owns a 5150 that I loan or give one to are 101% WITH ME 101% WITH ME that THESE REALLY MAKE this amp PERFORM !!!!

Re: 5150 "Clean" Channel
It IS ironic that the 5-minute edit limit was imposed because of ONE guy who abused
the edit function, and HE was banned at the same time the limit was imposed.????
As for Peavey clean, my Triumph P.A.G. combo is the same. It's like an Ultra except no resonance switch. The crunch and Ultra channels are a bit dry too like Doc said. I've been running an old HD1000 in the loop as a chorus for the clean, and flange for crunch and Ultra, and that helps, though the BBE and EQ would help a lot more I bet. And the Peavey reverb is ok in the clean channel
but almost nonexistent in either drive channel. What's up with that I wonder?Ron is the MAN!!!!

Re: 5150 "Clean" Channel
I do agree with doc, my combo does sound really dry, but it picked up with the 4X12 cab I hooked up to it. I would love to try the bbe with it, but I sold mine before I bought my 5150 I've fallen, Fallen through. If I'm Not With you, All I wanna Do Is Feel blue

Re: 5150 "Clean" Channel
The 5150 my brother has does not have a "clean" channel, you have to use the Rythm channel and it was pretty bad as far as trying to make it sound clean.
If I remember correctly, he had to sacrafice a lot to even get a somewhat clean tone from it. He has a combo version so I don't know if this makes a difference or not.Madness Reigns......... In the Hall of the Mountain King!

Re: 5150 "Clean" Channel
I dont really use the clean that much. I love the Crunch side though. The clean is flat sounding. I run a Ge7 in the loop and a BBE like Doc and it sounds great on the crunch. The clean sound better with this gear in the loop but it is not fender clean. My Dual Rectifier Rackmount is way better on the cleans. If you are looking to buy this head for the cleans... Look elsewhere - and that is the Bottom line.

Re: 5150 "Clean" Channel
I agree with Firebird. The crunch channel is excellent but the clean channel needs outboard effects. I used an a/b switch and routed my clean channel right through the board and used rack mount effects. I don't think the early 5150 heads or combos were ever intended to have a sparkling clean. I also used a BBE and a GE-7 with my 1st generation 5150. It is a great combination.

Re: 5150 "Clean" Channel
Blah,I get a GREAT sound out of my 5150 clean or dirty.....go hear and listen to my little wing sample and tell me you cannot get a good clean sound http://hometown.aol.com/s0l0ist
Play around with your guitar's volume control too,and yes I am using outboard effects as the 5150 is way too dry no matter what.

Re: 5150 "Clean" Channel
Evol, that is indeed a nice clean sound. It takes a lot of fine tuning to get a 5150 to sound like that. Strat, single coils, rolled volume on guitar, reverb, stereo chorus. I still think it doesn't sparkle enough. Darn good for a 5150.

Re: 5150 "Clean" Channel
there is a clean channel on it?....
that sound clip sounds great for a 5150, but its no fender...if you are into clean sounds, i think rivera has the best clean sound in the biz.
just my 2¢
