Someone else's junk ...(Sunn 1200s)

I got this huge assed Sunn 1200s for like 20 bucks out of the junk room when I bought my 5150 years ago. My dads friend made soem minor repairs, and man, this is the loudest thing ever. I think its a bass amp, really, but I get some cool crunchy sounds out of it, and some LOUD-assed clean tones as well. It has two little pre-amp tubes+FOUR 6550's. I am thinking a distortion pedal might make this thing useable. Its exciting to get a 70's peice of junk working again!

Well, after a slight Marshallization of the preamp, and the addition of an EMG 81 in my RR1, this thing roars!! Im totally nailing that ballsy Nothingface tone and the 4 6550's are louder than most any Marshall Ive heard, not bad for a junker amp that I got for practically nothing! I fished a Sunn 100S tube head out of the dump last month. It is just stupidly loud. It blows my huge Traynor Mark 3 away in volume.

Sunn 1200 is a guitar amp about 200 watts. The 2000 was the bass amp they were made to be really loud and clean.They came out about 68 or 69 to compete with Marshall that just started to come into the country.

My Beta Lead showed up today. I was having problems being heard over the drummer, now I'm having a hard time hearing the drums. [img]images/icons/grin.gif[/img] Let me tell you right now, the best thing you can do is buy a clean boost pedal. 20dB or more. Set the amp to where it's just starting to get a good AC/DC crunch, then fire up that boost... [img]images/icons/shocked.gif[/img] I've found the Beta Lead sounds best with the gain and level on about 4, the master maxed, with a boost pedal driving the front.
