Question about a Talk Box effect......

I'm familiar with and use a talk box that have the hose(which puts the sound into the microphone from your mouth) that comes up from the box that your guitar plugs into from a splitter, but the other night I saw a band and the guitarist used no hose at all and he was able to make the same "talk box" sound by moving his mouth in front of the microphone. How is this accomplished without a hose?

I have a digitech talker which does this. You plug the guitar and the mic into the pedal. Each goes to its own amp. Very cool and it does sound good. It also has a wah effect and some others but I never use those.
