Re: Duncan Distortion or Custom

Tim, I'm a big fan of the Custom as I find, for me, it is ballsey, but I can still pull subtlies out of it and its not biased towards any particular end of the EQ spectrum.
The Distortions I've used all seemed very "sledgehammer" in feel. If thats what you need, then they do have a good tone.

Chuck: Sledgehammer... good description. Distortions feel like they're about to go out of control at any second. They're not really subtle pickups most of the time. Everything pops out and b1tchslaps you.

I like Distortions in Strats, it makes them. . .less strat like.

I have in my jacksons in the past used a Distortion and Jazz combo. . and I like it. . The JB is good for rock, but sometimes can be thin, the custom I have never used before.

I have a distortion and its very balsy. Harmonics jump out at you with this pu. Lean off the volume and it cleans up nice also.

Hilarious descriptions Doc & BM!

Hey, let me know if you find a pickup so badass, it'll burst out of your guitar, burrow into your pants, chew your balls off, jump down onto your boots, spit your balls onto the floor, then start a bloody moshpit with your balls!

Only use the Distortion with older amps that don't have skullcrushing gain, or you'll end up with too much gain. If you've never thought there was such a thing as too much gain, try a Distortion-class pickup through an UltraGain-class amp
The Custom would be better with a high-gain amp/preamp.

The Custom 5 is a good one too.

we are currently using the distortion in one of our guitars....i find them to be pretty much over the top...not a lot of character really, just high output....but its nice for what it does....what ive been recomending to a lot fo people is the custom5, sh-14.....it has a nice EQ curve and really sings.....and is a beautiful match with the jazz neck pickup

If it has to be a Duncan, I'll have to go with Doc on this. A TB-11 Custom Custom.

Re: Duncan Distortion or Custom

I`ll second the Custom 5, very balanced. I also found the Distortion sounds way to thin on a really high gain amp. I thought it sounded terrible on my VHT Pittbull CL-100. Jack.

Re: Duncan Distortion or Custom

Thanks everyone. I have also heard great things about the Tone Zone. It is a hard decision. I don't think that the custom 5 will have enough power for me though. I am playing through Lee Jackson amps which are like a modified Marshall. The Duncan Distortion works well with this amp but I want to try something different.

Thanks for all the suggestions. If you have more please share. I think I might try a Tone Zone in the bridge and a Air Norton in the neck.

THE CUSTOM 5 AND THE TONE ZONE ARE(oops sorry about the caps) pretty similar....but i find the custom 5 to be better balanced but with a stronger low end than the tone zone....i used to be a tone zone only player until i got the custom 5
