• Emg neck humbucker 81 85 60 ?

Well I decided to go back to active pickups again the jb and 59 just don't go where I need to be. I had the 81 in the bridge and sa's in the neck but that axe is gone and now I'm putting an 85 in the bridge it is just fatter and better for me. The ? is do I go 60 85 or 81 in the neck. Clean tones aren't my thing so I need a nice neck for kick ass leads fat and fatt. I'm thinking the dual 85 might not be good but is an 81 in the neck good or should I go 60. Thank you for any help I know this can get to be annoying the tone quest.

I'd say if you're mainly looking at it for necky leads, and you know you like the 85, go ahead and get a 2nd 85 for the neck. The 81 or 60 will give you more "screamy" leads, but you want "fat" leads...that's 85 territory, as you've already discovered with the bridge position.

I'm a weirdo, and always prefer to have the same pickup in both positions, if possible, because I hate switching between bridge and neck and having a completely different sound. I put 81s in both positions on all my EMG guitars. If I was into 85s, I'd do the same with them--85s in both positions.

My favorite EMG combo at the moment is the 85b/60n in my Jackson Dinky HX. I've also got a Dinky Reverse with the 81b/85n combo, and a Hamer with two 81s. I prefer the 81 or the 60 in the neck over the 85, but that's because I prefer a brighter neck pup. Though, EMGs in any position kick ass!!!

Okay, somebody take RacerX's pick...anybody THAT drunk has no business playing guitar--especially any pointy-metal guitars!

i`ve got an 81/SA combo in my 1993 Jackson Archtop Soloist and a 85b/81n in my 1984 Hamer Blitz. I think the 81 in my Soloist is very thin sounding, but my Hamer is crushing with Fatt palm muting I beleive the 81 will be comeing out of the bridge in my Soloist and an 85 going in. I can`t get over how awsome sounding the 85 is, and not happy with the thin sounding 81, although for Slayer stuff the 81 is King, but hey, the 85 fattens up the mid heavy Slayer songs. I don`t like anything in the neck, I don`t use that position and I wish all of my guitars just had the bridge humbucker only I am a total EMG 85 nutttttttttttt Jack.

Same as a few others who have replied, I've used 81(b) 60(n) for years and love it.
