• Out of curiosity...

How many of you would be interested in fully custom speaker cabinets? Something that is priced competitively with mid-range production cabinets, yet offers many more options. Speaker selection, cabinet material, choice of covering (color, pattern, etc.), and even some construction options. Want a 2x12/1x15 combo cabinet? Doable. In Orange Tolex with Vox grille cloth? No problem. Want me to put on a purple thing and dance around? That's gonna cost a LOT...

I've been considering doing this for a while, but I don't know if the market exists for custom guitar cabinets, or even for small cabinet makers PERIOD. Let me know what you all think.

The market is definitely there, considering all the discussions I've read about Avatar cabs over the past few months. How many small cab builders exist, I couldn't say, so there could be quite a bit of competition.

For myself personally, I'm pretty well set since I just run 2x12 combos and cabs, but if I was going to buy a full stack, I would most likely get custom cabs. Maybe you should team up with Twister!

I dunno, I'd rather have the naked oiled up girlies sliding all over me rather than my amp.

Hey my room mate wants to know if you can make a 2X12 with a leapard print finish for his rig?

Yeah the market definitely must exist. The place I had my custom rack built also makes all sorts of custom speaker cabinets and stuffs too. It's cool stuff, the hardest thing is always gaining the confidence of people to buy your stuff over something they can easily go to a store, pick up, then return if they need to.

Re: Out of curiosity...

Hell, if Pete's game for a collaboration I'm up for it. I think I can steal a Twister mat from a friend or something...

Okay, it's obvious there will have to be SOME limitations, but ones I can't control. For instance, if nobody makes a suitable amp covering with a leopard print, it's not doable. It'll be a couple of months before we can get this up and running. Mostly because there's a nice big '65 Mustang parking its ass right in the middle of our workspace (my dad's restoring it for a friend of his).

Stu: THAT is the biggest PITA about it. Making a name for yourself is a b!tch. Hopefully we'll find a way (or ten...).

In the meantime if anyone has any suggestions or questions or advice or... hell, ANYTHING, it would be most welcome.

Re: Out of curiosity...

Considering some of the fabrics I saw while looking for a winter camo print for my Concept fabric refin, I think you'd have no problem finding something suitable for a cab. The fabric I bought is easily on par with the "carpet" I've seen on a lot of cabs.

One suggestion I would make is to offer isolation cabs, or maybe some slightly less common designs. I know Hartke built a bass combo with two 12" speakers, one in front (standard 12" cab) and another that aimed at the floor. How about making cabs with rack slots for folks who want to mount their own rackmount gear? I know I love my Peavey Classic VT 410 combo for basically having a half-stack in one unit.

Re: Out of curiosity...

Isolation cabs would be good. Probably tough to do right though. Worth a shot, in any case. I've been thinking about a cab/rack combo for a while too. I'm sure there's a lot of guys like me that use only a couple of rackmount units (one EQ, one power strip) and being able to carry one box instead of two is always good. Ooh, this gives me an idea... I'm off to plot and scheme...

While you've got the sawdust flyin...
How about a three or four space rack enclosure that is the overall same outside width and depth as a 4x12 cab?
Lots of folks run a small rack with a couple of things in it, and sitting it on the cabinet, then parking the head on top is the way to go but it looks stupid!

Ooh, good one. The extra space could be used to store cables and pedals and tools and crap. It's... I mean... and the... the thing... I'm buying you a pizza!

Definitely a cool idea. I've been wanting to eventually get a new combo guitar amp that's 1x15 or 2x12/1x15.
