• Is this normal for a relativly in expensive amp ?

So recently, I bought a Marshall AVT 20 combo to take with me to college. Before that, I have only owned, a crappy peavey practice amp, a crappy fender practice amp and a 5150 half stack.

Now, the Marshall seems to have big problems with too much distortion. It almost sounds like there is a horrible crackeling when too much distortion is used. Like the speaker cant handle it. Im not totally sure how to describe it, but it just sounds almost like the speaker is distorting the sound coming through it to a point were it sounds rippled and crappy.

Is this normaly for a mid ranged - low quality amp ? Or should I run this thing back to GC and exchange for something else ?

Does anybody know any decent combo's 1 12 or smaller that can handle metal ? I really liked the marshall for a while, but it seems to be going south.

Probably for a new Marshall AVT 20. I'm sorry, but these things Marshall is cranking out now are the cheapest pieces of crapola they can make, and people still buy this third world junk cause it says "Marshall" on the front. Wake up, people! It's Crap! Marshall hasn't made anything worth a quarter of the price tag in ten years or more!

Return that garbage to GC and buy something made right.

Are they laneys any good ? I have my eye on a Mesa Studio .22 on ebay. Just worried about it not being the original speaker in the thing.

I'll second the Laney Tube Fusions. I have a TF300 - 3 channels, tube preamp & independent gain controls on 2 of them, solid state channel for clean. I like mine a lot, but then I haven't gigged with it either, so I don't know how it will hold up to the rigours of live playing. Works very well for what I want though. The guy with the mesa studio .22 says he has a new Peavey Blue Marvel speaker he would put in for 40 bucks.

Are those things any good ?
