  • Please help quick - speaker cab question.

I have built a 2 x 12 cabinet for using at home, and I am about to wire it up. I need to know whether to wire in series or parallel. Both speakers are 8 ohms, and amp output is 8 ohms. If I wire in series do I change the resistance?

If you wire it in series, it will be 16 ohms and if you wire it in parallel it will be 4 ohms. Oops.

you cant get 8 ohms out of two 8 ohm speakers. Wire'em in parallel.

But if you wire it parallel you'll have a 4 ohm load which could do harm to some amps rated at 8 ohms if you were to crank it up. Make sure your amp output stage can handle the lower resistance. Does your amp have two speaker outputs? If so, wire the cab in stereo with each speaker connected to its own jack and you will have two 8 ohm inputs.

Well, since most amps with dual speaker outs are wired in parallel anyway, what difference will it make if the parallel wiring is happening in the cab or in the speaker outs of the amp? Won't it end up as a 4 ohm load either way?
