      Re: old a new marshalls

      That's pretty much it.

The new one are crapfully made with truly cheap components (particularly transformers and caps). Which is amazing, because marshall ALWAYS used somewhat cheap manufacturing methods to keep the amps affordable to the musician. When they came out, they were really the lower cost alternative to Fender amps at that time.

They have definitely managed to make them even cheaper though, haha...

If you want an 800, find an old 2203 (100watt) 2204 (50watt) vertical input jack, single channel 1981-1983 master volume one with 6550 tubes etc if you can (getting rare).

After that in the mid 80s, they changed power supply design in the 2204 (the 2203 followed later),increasing noise and changing the tone to a more thin sound and also eventually went to PCB mounted controls and EL34 tubes.

The later dual channel 800s 2210 (100watt) 2205 (50 watt) had a bit more gain somewhat, some diode are induced, but retain the bogus power supply design and the clean (if you can call it that) channel crosstalked a lot with the gain channel and those amps didn't sound as good as the older single channel ones at high volumes.

Didn't the later, crappier 80s ones have horizontal inputs? If I was in a straight-ahead punk rock band I'd probably look into getting a JCM 800.

Yeah its true, the older Marshalls have more girth/umph to them. Especially in the mids... thats where all their massive tone comes from.

I agree with John (Clevelandmetal)...I have a 2203 w/6550's that I have had since the 80's and it has some balls out power and tone. Not known for the gain of todays amps but with a SD1 and GE7 you can get some great metal tones outta it. I have had several Marshalls over the years and I kept only one of them, which ironically is the first one I ever bought. Even the same 2203s from the same era had differences between them...at least noticable to my ears.

                      Re: old a new marshalls

i heard one of the newer ones after a guy had it modded by trace at voodoo amps. 300 bucks, took the crap electronics out of it, put good in, took the solid state crap out of the gain stage, biased it, put new tubes in it, added a bass boost.

Also, I know some people are going to laff, if you want a good amp with channel switching have trace work on a TSL100 for you. He says for channel switching in an amp, buy one of those, let him work on it, or, have him build you an amp.

Alot of the components in the JCM2000s suck, I need a couple caps that are in my clean channel, I get a mild buzz now that I didnt used to get. Im going to have Trace mod it.

Personal prefference, people tell me Mesa is overpriced junk, but my Mesa is unique and I have not found one like it.

Anyway, have someone take the shiiiit components out of your marshall, put good in, and there ya go.

I really dislike MESA stuff. But, it is definitely NOT overpriced junk at all. It is generally very well made with reasonably high quality components. Not as nice as they used to be. But, still of the best mass produced amps assuredly. You really can't fault them very much quality-wise.

I just don't like the sag they seem to have. I prefer a more Marshall-like quick response and edgey clarity. "I" can't get my sound from a MESA. Others do quite well.

I've dialed my CAE3+se to do a cross between the best Marshall clear crunch tone I can get with strong hint of MESA thickness.
