  • Your opinions on the Fender Hot Rod Deville series

I'm looking for an amp and am considering quite a few right now. My budget is about $1000, so I'm limited as to what I can get. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Fender 4x10 Hot Rod Deville series is going for around $800. It's all tube and seems to be the next best thing to a head and a 4x12 cab. It also only weighs 55 lbs., which is lighter than most solid states. I play hard rock, mostly, and I've heard that putting a distortion pedal with the DeVille pushes it very well. I was thinking about the Dunlop MXR Doubleshot since it has two separate distortion tones, which with the amp will give me four tones.

Anyone had experience with these? Thanks!

Look around bro. There are a ton of amps in that price range to choose from. You could even get a Carvin Legacy for that price. Its a killer amp.
Here are brands to look at assuming you want tubes:
    Carvin
    Mesa Boogie
    Laney
    Randall
    Crate
If you are looking for vintage sound look at the Carvin Bel-Air too.

Well, I'm not opposed to solid state amps. I was also looking into the Tech 21 Trademark 120. The AVT series from Marshall looks promising as well. I'm not well-versed in amps. The last one I owned was a Peavey Special 212. I liked it, and I gigged with it a lot, but I needed to use a noise reduction unit to keep it from squealing. I'd like to get something that doesn't squeal at high volumes, but I don't want to spend a fortune to get that.

My good friend has had a Hot Rod DeVille 4x10 as his main amp for about the past 6 years or so...he's always told me that he's never been able to get a good distorted tone out of the amp, and has always relied solely on pedals and processors.

An old guitarist in our Classic Metal Cover band used one for some time and miced it up. It was horrible. He must have bought every pedal known to man, and it was still pretty much a bummer. We always ridiculed him for his unpleasant tone.

It certainly sounded great for his country gig though...

That sounds about right! I always liked the clean tone from it, however.

                For solid state look at:
                Tech 21 Trademark 120
                Vetta 2
                Spyder 2
                Flextone 3
                Fender Cybertwin
                Hughes & Kettner Attax
                Peavey Supreme
                Peavey Ultra
                Some of the Marshalls
Even VOX makes a couple of excellent SS amps
                Ampeg SS70C or SS140C

I had a Fender 4+10 Hot Rod DeVille!
Sold it for 750$ a year ago!

Great amp! Very huge sound wise, but by far not the best in your prce range. A leat not for hard rock!
Even tough the pedal you mentioned is very worth considering, try something else. MOre powerfull!
First of all i Would very much sugest looking for 2*12 instead of 10''!
Its great for soloing but it lack the edge when it comes to rhythm playing in band with bass and another guitar. My experience.
                    OTherwise a great amp!

                    Try out the Nomad!

Try a Mesa Rocket 44 4x10 if the Deville is your cup of tea. You'll get the metal gain you're looking for in a similar package.

                        Hotrod is nice amp.
I tried it at GC and ws nice sounding amp.If you have that much money, I would go with something else as option.
How about Mesa DC series or Peavey Classic 30 combo. They are all good and can be purchased cheaper.
