I really don't understand the "fizz and flub" argument. I've never had either problem

Haaaaaaaaaaah

I've tried one once, can't say i liked it. Though i usually don't like amps (5150, Marshall Mode Four among others)...There's not enough definition and just too much fuzz and looseness.

A distorted sound should be 'kinda' clean when only one string is picked IMO

You don't like amps? What do you play through?

Re: Peavey XXX

Having recentely owned a Rectifier, I can say that there is a some fizz and flub to them that I wasn't able to dial out.

The XXX's I've played have WAY more gain than the Recto's. The damping switch makes a big difference. I've only played them at low volumes so I don't know how well they hold up at high volumes.

I'm thinking about getting a new amp and I'm seriously considering the XXX because you can get a used head for $600-700.

I would say the sound is close in spirit to the Recto, but it's a lot different than the Recto.

I agree with John.. I decided to try out a rectifier again today.. sat down with a dual recto for about an hour at GC and I couldn't get rid of the damn fuzz. I still thought it was pretty good, but could be much better imo without the fuzziness.

What's funny about tha MESAs, is that it does seem that some people get a pretty cool sound from them. I've tried them at length with different cabs, guitars and whatnot. I REALLY wanted to like them. Never could get my sound outta them. I will say they kick the crap out of new marshalls.

They ar well made, just just not my gig. If I had to do a show using either an XXX or a MESA, I think I'd grab the XXX.

Re: Peavey XXX

John -

Hey, we can't all have CAE & VHT - somebody's gotta keep Mesa in business.

Steve -

Hey, whatever works for you, but the XXXs I've played through, while they do sound good, do NOT sound as good as a T-Rec when I'm playing it. I don't even think they sound as good as the 5150, unless you take clean channels into account.

Mesa isn't the be-all, end-all, at all - there are many high-quality tube amps out there that I like the sound of. Soldano, Bogner, Engl, etc. Hell, I'd have a Larry if I could afford one - those things sound awesome, but for $5000, they
SHOULD.

I do, however, get sick of the "Mesa are overpriced piles of crap that <insert amp x here> sounds SO much better than" crap that goes on around here. If you like an XXX or an XXL better, use it - not everyone likes what the Recto sounds like. (Apparently, NO ONE does around here.)

The point of my statements about Rectos is always simple - do NOT dismiss them as muddy, "nu-metal" amps that everyone's solid state radio with a fuzzbox plugged into it is superior to. They're more than a one-trick pony, but it's up to the player to bring it out, just like any amp.

End of Rant.

Re: Peavey XXX

I actually liked the Duel rectos Steve and I did a gig in Vancouver with. I thought our sound was increadable and we had 2 minutes to tweak them. It might have something to do with the fact that they were made 94'. I have heard there was a differance with those compaired to the new.

I also I know there is a bunch of options when you look in the back of those and I'm sure if anyone screwed with all of those options (Variac,Tube/Silicon Diodes, 3 Fully Independent Channels with 8 modes (Channel 1=Clean or Pushed, Channel 2= Raw, Vintage High Gain or Modern High Gain, Channel 3=Raw, Vintage High Gain or Modern High Gain and biasing for 6l6 or el34)Thats alot to fuck with, so I think you would pretty much need to take one home for a day or two.

Mike; How is yours set up?

i think you hit the nail on the head dave. a lot of stuff to screw with on a recto, really easy to make it sound horrible, but that comes with the too many options territory. personally i think the Raw setting sounds horrible i don't see how anyone could possibly want it.
