Re: Peavey XXX

Dave -

Actually, my setup with it is pretty simple - while I've played with the tube rectifiers being on, and the variac, I don't usually use them. It is VERY easy to make a Recto sound like crap - grab the gain knob and turn it all the way up in "Modern" mode, for example. You'll get a toneless mess.

I have a 2001, three channel Triple Rec. My setup is:

Silicon diode rectifier
Variac at normal
6L6s

Red channel for rhythm:
Presence 11:30
Master 10:00
Gain 1:30
Bass 8:30
Mid 8:30
Treble 1:00

I use Duncan JBs (a JB7, usually), and a Peavey cab with Celestion '85s in it. Tonally, the closest comparison I can give is the Iced Earth "Alive In Athens" album, although I have a little more bottom end than that.

I have heard a Triple with EL34s in it, and have considered switching mine out, but I really like he tone I'm getting now, so...

Buzz -

Played around with the "Raw" setting right after I got the amp - with the tube rectifiers, and really loud, it can actually sound pretty cool for that "edge of overdrive" sort of tone. You definately have to spend some time tweaking these amps to get the sound you want, though...

Re: Peavey XXX

I have been pondering what people have been saying about the XXX sounding like a recto.

I expected it to sound very similar when I got it, but I didn't hear that at all. Since credible people have made this statement I have set out to see if I can get the Recto sound.....

It wasn't hard, but since I like a nice tight sound I have had the dampening switch on tight 99% of the time since I have had this and that is why I didn't hear the Recto in it.

I just set it to loose (Not loose in the sense I thought it would be) and set the gain at 12 O clock. Gave it lots of bass, 3 O clock on the treb and bit of mids. This gave me a sound very similar to what I remember about the show I did with Volatiles (Vancouver death metal band) Duel rectos.

The loose setting didn't "loosen it up" like I thought it would, it sort of gave it a growl.

So now I have some more tweaking ahead of me.

Anyhow just babbling here...

[edit] I forgot to mention, this was using the crunch ch.

Re: Peavey XXX

I just added some modified XXX clips to my sound clip page. The playing sucks so try to listen thru that! The power amp section and preamp were modified to get rid of some of the thin buzz and give the amp some dynamics and warmth. The amp has JJ E34L power tubes and was recorded thru a 5150 cab with an Ibanez RG760. The clip labeled XXX Mod was done with a Les Paul.

Re: Peavey XXX

First off, I'll start off by saying that no Mesa is better than any Marshall nor is the converse true. They are two COMPLETELY different amps that cover completely different sonic ground. No one is better than the other.

Furthermore I've owned an XXX and it is a great amp in many regards. The reason why many people compare it to a Mesa is for two reasons, one is because it uses 6L6s and that can give it that Mesa type scooped tone and the other reason is because it has an active EQ which allows for major scooping well beyond that of a regular Marshall. But that is where the comparison ends in my opinion...it still doesn't have that low mid hump that Mesa's have in their natural voicing.

Furthermore, I find the XXX to be more flexible in tones that both those amps which is part of the reason why I love it so much. The ability to switch between EL34 and 6L6 type tubes allows me to cop Marshall-like and Mesa-like tones with ease while cover ALL THE GROUND in between those two very different amps.

In addition, the active EQ is a HUGE tone shaping tool for this amp and allows so many great tones the way the knobs interact with each other.

I will say however, that I do not care for this amp in it's stock form. I find it to be somewhat buzzy and harsh due to the fact that the stock tubes are a little crummy, biased too cold, and has too much pre-amp gain. After doign some tweaking though, this amp now screams and easily keep up with any DSL/TSL or Mesa tonewise.

And I got my amp new for $750 so the price was a big factor for me too.

Great 3 channel amp for me and for anyone that likes a lot of tones on the cheap.

Here's some clips I've done over time...not the best but alright and showcase some of the tones available on this.

GerryP: Those clips sound like a totally different amp then mine. I don’t think I'll be putting in EL34's. I guess I just have a different tone goal.

Ranalli: Nice clips. You nailed the AC/DC Highway to Hell nicely! The others were great too and the clean sounds great with a bit of reverb. Next step for me is to get an effects unit to run through the loop. Any ideas?

Perhaps I will have time to upload some clips tonight.

Great clips! I'm seriuosly considering an XXX. Gotta wait till NAMM though to try everything out.

Anyone play the 2x12 combo XXX?
