I've decided to try my hand at building a cabinet. I figure it should be straightforward, and I have already gathered all the parts except the speakers themselves. I'm thinking about getting 4 Madison Symphony speakers for it. They appear to be a copy of the Celestion G12K85, as they even share the model number G12K85. Does anyone have any knowledge of Madison stuff? Are these thing any good?

I have a Madison 4x12 with these speakers and they have a very scooped sound as where you get moderate highs lots of lows and very little mids, if that is the sound you like I say go for it, but if you nead more of a searing and bright sound, I say you would be better served with the GT12-75s or Lead 80s. I love the Symphonys for their powerfull rythym crunch [img]images/icons/grin.gif[/img] Jack. -

if your building a closed back cab, i'd go with mesa vintage 30's.
guitars need midrange, its all they can technically pruduce, and thats where they fit in the mix right.Comment

Well, I picked up a set of the Symphonys for $60. Pretty fargin cheap for a brand new set of speakers. I have all the parts for my new cab.
1 - 4' x 8' sheet 11 ply 3/4" birch plywood.
4 - heavy duty steel castors.
2 - heavy duty speaker handles.
4 - 2 leg cabinet corners.
4 - 3 leg cabinet corners.
55" x 4 yards Purple lizardskin Tolex.
2 - 1/4" sockets.
1 - dual socket dish.
The only thing I haven't got is the grill cloth. I'm not sure if I'm going with cloth or individual steel mesh speaker covers. I also have to borrow a dovetailing jig from my friend's dad.
The good thing is, once it's finished, if I don't like the sound of the Madisons, I can just yank them out, and toss in something else.Comment
