• kirk hammet live racks

Hi, I'm new to the rack equipment and I was when I saw a photo of kirk's live rack (I think everyone would be ).

You can see the racks here:

Rack 1 (preamps): http://filepit.freewebs.com/montyjay...irkpreamps.jpg

Rack 2 (power amps): http://filepit.freewebs.com/montyjay...kpoweramps.jpg

The rack has:

Rack 1: Juice goose grand loop control 320 (power strip)
EMB Audio Remote wah
Nady 1200 wireless system
sony wrr-840 wireless system
TC electronics m2000 effects processor
Bradshaw RSB-18R switching system
Custom Audio Electronics 4x4 switcher
Mesa Boogie hi gain amp switcher
Marshall jmp-1 preamp
Mesa Boogie Triaxis (clean)
Mesa Boogie Triaxis (distortion)
Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier
Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier

Rack 2:

(spaces 1-4 are covered)
(spaces 5-8 have a slight see thru cover)
(spaces 9 and 10 are covered)
EMB Audio remote wah
Mesa/boogie Strategy 400 Stereo Power Amp
Mesa/boogie Strategy 400 Stereo Power Amp

I have two question, plz if somebody know answer:

1) How on hell (in which order) he connects all that stuf??!! Which is the last equipment in the first rack before going to the next (second, power amp) rack?
From where does the signal goes to the 2nd rack? From the Mesa Boogie Amp switcher? Can somebody plz explain me how this thing works?

2) How he has dual rectifier heads and also 2 power amps, I think he don't uses de power section of the Dual Rectifiers, Am I correct? So his Dual rectifier are modified just to act like a preamp...

Thanks

I hope this photo will interest everyone, not just me....

Re: kirk hammet live racks

Dual Rectifiers have a built in slave out, so they wouldn't require any kind of modification to be run into external poweramps...they're designed to work that way if needed.

I've seen those pics before, those were his touring racks around the time of the Load/Reload/Garage/S&M tours. The answer to your first question is simple...he has all the components in the rack set up in the Bradshaw RSB-18 switching system, which is controlled by a foot controller. Basically he has different patches set up so if he wants, say, a clean tone with a delay, then he'd hit a switch and the RSB-18 would bring up his Triaxis, M2000, and a Strategy 400, and everything else that is not used is bypassed. As for your second question, he most likely uses the power amps to power the Mesa Triaxis preamps and the Marshall JMP-1 preamp in the first rack. Hope this helps you out!!

Thanks

I ask because I'm planning to do a rack for me (not that complex, obviously) and I don't want any troubles, so I am learning all this kind of stuff first. And because is very interesting, everyday I am more suprised for all the kind of equipment available.

Also can you recommend me some rack equipment?

I was thinking in:

-Power Suply
-Wireless (Audiotechinica ATW-3110D)
-Tuner
-ROCTRON HUSH C Noise gate
--------------------------> Wah pedal Dunlop 535Q
-LEXICON MPX-1 (Maybe this in the effect loop?)
-(AMP SWITCHING SYSTEM)(4X4 Custom Audio electronics? GCX Guitar Audio Switcher by DMC? Mesa Boogie High Gain Amp switcher?)
-MESA TRIAXIS
-MARSHALL JCM2000 TSL100 (does this amp have the same option as the Dual Rectifier for jumping the power section?)
-A POWER AMP (MESA SIMUL-CLASS 2: 90? MESA RECTO 2:100? MARSHALL EL-34 100:100?)

All controlled via MIDI Foot controller (Ground Control Pro? ROCKTRON ALL ACCESS? CUSTOM AUDIO ELECTRONICS RS-10?

Thanks!

Re: kirk hammet live racks

Angst,

Keep in mind that you have to build a rack that you are happy with!! you dont have to please anybody else but yourself!!! Please remembe that. THis rack stuff is so damn subject to a million differnet opinions. I will lay our my rack scenario for you to ponder, maybe it will help you. I hope it does. I know when I built my rack, I looked at lots of them and considereed many options.

Here is hte layout of my rack

its all powered by a Furman power supply and light.
I have an AXXESS switching system very similar to a CAE, or CGX. I highly recommend you check out AXXESS stuff before you buy a switching system, I have been very happy with mine.

OK heres the signal chain:

Loop #1- BOSS Noise supressor with a BOSS compressor sustainer wired in the Noise supressors own loop.
Loop #2-Ibanez Tube Screamer

Loop #3 - Marshall JMP-1 preamp

Loop #4 - Mesa/Boogie Rectifier recording preamp

Loop #5 - one side of a BBE 482 sonic maximizer

Loop #6 - the other side of the BBE( I have one setup for each preamp, you can optimize each premap better this way)

Loops 7 and 8 are setup as latching switches for the channel switching and solo funciton on the Mesa boogie preamp.
Then the signal goes to a Rocktron Intellifex which is controller via midi (along with the JMP-1) by the AXXESS system. then the outputs go to a Marshall EL34 50/50 power amp which drives a Marshall 4x12 and a laney 4x12.

I can get pretty much any sound that I desire with this rack, but I am sure it would be completely useless for other guitarists. to each his own. You have to use components that you like and experiment with the rack. Expect some long nites of tinkering and tweaking before you really get what your looking for. I hope this helps you out. I had several people help me out here when I built mine and I appreciated the input they gave me. Rock on, good luck, and let us know how it goes!!

Hey Tonemonster, which Axess unit do you own? I was checking out their site just the other day.

Thanks godwentpunk!! You and Big Neddi are the only guys that have told me that!!

Boxcar, I have 2 of the GRX4 switchers, and an MFC5 foot controller controlling both of them. I really like them alot. I hope people consider them before they rush out and buy a GCX or a CAE. Mario just makes damn nice products and he is a super guy to deal with. He doesnt rush you or make you feel like your bothering him, he treats you like a Pro. Which is so cool!!

Re: kirk hammet live racks

Which Rack Digital Effects processor you recommend me? I have seen the G-Force, the M2000 and the M3000...

Is there any rack effects processor that doesn't have 2 or 3 seconds loading between changing the preset and patches during a song?

Thanks

angst,
the other guitar player in the band uses a tc electronics g-major it seems to work very well for him
I prefer using single function rack pieces so I went with Line-6 pro rack mod&delay these work great with no time delay

Tonemonster,
you can email it to me and I will post a link for people to see
Haven't figured out how to post a picture on the board??
Any help would be great!!
