• Tube question......

My XXX came with sovtek 6l6wxt's. I read that they are a good work horse but, not the best for tone.

So I was wondering....I have 4 matched EH 6l6gc's which I requested to be hot from thetubestore.com. I liked what they did for my other amp so I wondered if it would be safe to just swap them without any problems?

I alredy swapped the sovtek that was in the in the phase inverter hole with one of my 12AX7EH and it smoothed it out alot. I got that from Erotubes that a balanced tube would help there.

I believe you'd still need to have your amp biased, though.

Re: Tube question......

According to Peaveys website, all the newer Peavey tube heads have a set bias. I was going to have my Ultra Classic retubed and we couldnt find a bias adjustment on it anywhere.

Check out the tube head forum at Peavey.com. I would have put a link but their site is down for some reason.

Is there a reason to have a fixed bias or should it be adjustable, and is there any way to make it adjustable without doing a ton of retrofitting?

I do have a bias adjust on it but, I dont have a tester. I was hoping it would be ok just to throw a matched quad in there. Knowing they are biased hot, I would just have the bias turned up a bit.

call the tubestore.com on monday. tell them the matching number on your set, and ask them about the amp you want to put them in. They were hot for the other amp, but your new amp is probably set up different, so they might be hot in it, they might not.

...You could also call Groovetubes. Rick B. over there is extremely knowledgable...if your amp has a set bias, probably best to run a middle-of-the-road rated tube (like a 5-6 GT rating) rather than some ultra hot ones.

Just thought I'd let you guys know how it went...
Jon at thetubestore.com e-mailed me back and said Just watch them for the first 20-30 minutes and if you see and hot red areas form on the grey metal parts inside then turn off the amp (the heater filaments are red hot so don't be confused by this). If you don't see anything unusual you should be fine.

It sounds tight tight tight! I couldn't stop palm muting

So for the hell of it I put the Sovteks in my old YCV 80.....Damn! I don't want to sell it now. I loves these tubes for some reason. I can even back off the gain from where I had it and it doesn't feed back when I crank it to 7 (pre) and 7 (post) like it use to. This is why I wanted to sell it in the first place.
