Washburn USA Mercury w/GK2A into Roland VG8EX into Roland JC120............

or

1 of 36 guitars (obvious sign of a mental problem) into Rocktron Voodu Valve into Vestax HD6 into Roland JC120..................

I really like JC120s...........

Re: Post your setup........AGAIN

My setup is evolving almost as we speak, but here is what it looks like at the moment:

Bass: 1985 Jackson Concert Bass --> Johnson J-Station --> Akai DPS-12 hard disk recorder workstation. Wouldn't mind upgrading to a BassPOD or BassPODxt, but I've got to save up a bit for that, and the J-Station is perfectly adequate as a bass amp modeler.

Guitar: 1993 Jackson Soloist Custom (modified to dual-hum configuration) --> Peavey Rockmaster preamp --> ADA Ampulator speaker/power amp simulator --> Rocktron Chameleon 2000 (strictly for the effects section--I turn the preamp controls to neutral settings) --> Akai DPS-12.

The Chameleon is going to go out the door soon, to be replaced by some kind of a Rocktron dedicated effects unit. The Intellifex would be my first choice, but it doesn't have a speaker simulator. The Replifex, Xpression, and Multivalve all have speaker sims, and one of those will probably be my first choice, unless I get the rhythm guitar sound I'm looking for by using the Ampulator speaker sim (see below).

My guitar setup is pretty flexible. I like to use a variety of different sounds, and I've three basic signal paths through my setup for different purposes:

1. Rockmaster --> Both power amp and speaker sims in Ampulator activated --> Rocktron effects with speaker sim off. This seems to work best for my lead sound, as the ADA speaker sim is a bit brighter and aggressive. The Ampulator's 12ax7-driven power amp simulator circuitry provides a LOT of depth and complexity to the sound beyond what you can by going from preamp right to speaker sims. It's a lot more than just a simple tube path, like you find on tube compressors and mic pre's--it really does simulate the effects of a power amp on your guitar sound. However, you have to be careful in a metal setting not to drive it very hard, since you typically want most of your gain coming from the preamp. A Stevie Ray 'Fender balls to the wall' sound would be a different matter--there, you'd mostly want the drive coming from the power amp (think Stevie Ray or Hendrix turning an old Fender up to within an inch of its life). On the Ampulator, driving the gain adds a lot of body and compression to the sound, but it also muddies up an already distorted preamp tone.

2. Rockmaster --> Ampulator power amp sim activated, but speaker sim deactivated --> Rocktron effects and speaker sim activated. Provides a more 'squashed' lead tone. I don't favor this one, as much.

3. Rockmaster 'direct' output (-10db) --> Rocktron effects and speaker sim. Great for metal chunk rhythm. With the Ampulator going, there is too much tube action going on to get a really tight square-waveish extreme metal rhythm sound. Too much low-end gunk, since I don't have a outboard para-EQ to put before the Rockmaster. When I get that, I will probably run through the full Ampulator setup all the time, as its speaker sim is somewhat more realistic sounding than the Rocktron.

Ahh, the studio gear wish list grows ever longer...

My setup is modest compared to some, but it’s way too much stuff for someone who is a pretty crappy player.

Guitars:
Jackson RR1

Jackson JJ1 (Setup for C standard)

Gear:
Peavey 5150

my lead guitarist uses:

fender roc pro head and the band that played before us' cab.
