• Twister, help please!!!!

I just got a used tube head and when it is turned up past like one or two, it makes a high pitched squealing noise. I am sure that at least one of the power tubes is bad. Could this be the cause of the problem or could it be something more than that?

    Thanks, DOn

sounds more like a preamp tube to me, but pete (twisteramps) will probably know best.

i'd take it to a pro amp tech and get it checked out.

The Tube Amp Debug Page at http://www.geofex.com/ has a section on squealing, that might help.

I had a power tube squeal to make your ears bleed... the wife loved that.

        Re: Twister, help please!!!!

When I got in there and looked around at the tubes I noticed one of them had a blue plasma looking spark around it. I think this might be the problem. I switched between it and another tube and it did the same thing in the other socket.

Now for my next question, where is a good place to order tubes from. My amp has a fixed bias so I dont need to have it rebiased.

Call Bob at www.eurotubes.com. He'll tell you exactly what you need.

www.dougstubes.com is a good place. I wouldn't deal with the tubestore, personally. Bob at eurotubes is ok too.

If your amp really is fixed bias, it still needs to be biased! fixed just means that they used a resistor in place of a bias pot. My '68 princeton was fixed bias - I had to replace that resistor when I changed tubes. The type of bias that is 'automatic' so to speak is called cathode bias.

what type of amp is it?

Its a Peavey Ultra Classic Plus. 120 Watts. I found an article on it on the peavey website but cant remember where it was. I know it has a quad of 6L6's.
