• Take my Vetta/tube amp challenge! :)

Ok, I recorded 7 clips of the first solo of Hotel California. Yep, I tossed some clams - each was a first take. Woop. This is what I used... see if you can identify em:

VETTA EMULATIONS
Matchless D30
Marshall JCM800
Fender Deluxe
Bogner Ecstacy
AC30
Peavey 5150

REAL TUBE AMP:
Modded Fender Champ

Each was recorded at the same volume - sorta loud, but not neighbor-angering volumes. My wife was watching TV in the next room, without the door shut. She complained a bit, but hey, she complains anyways

Signal path was vetta or champ into a Peavey VTM 4x12 w/Celestion 85 watt speakers. SM-57 microphone (straight on, about 1/2 inch to the outside of the dustcap edge, centered up and down, against the grillcloth) into a behringer ultragain pro mic preamp into an audigy 2 card.

Guitar used was a peavey wolfgang, neck pickup, swapped to bridge just before the 'chuck berry' part.

Do you guys think it sounds better with a mic than the Direct out stuff I've been posting?

They all sound great. My favorites are clip 5 and 7. I think clip 7 is the modded Fender.

i have to agree on clip 7 sounding like the modded Fender...

i keep hearing the rest of it in my head after you stop...lol
it may not be a shredder, but i've always loved the lead in that song.

I think I'll go with 4 and 6 being the best...

I'll have to reveal what the others were later... these are the ones I remember (I have the full list on my home PC):

1) 5150
2) 'real' tube amp - self modded fender champ
4) bogner xtc model

Re: Take my Vetta/tube amp challenge!

I liked #2 the best and #6 second best. #4 was pretty good sounding, and I didn't like any of the others all that much, at least for that tune.

4 was my favorite. If you wouldn't have already given it away, I would have picked it as the tube amp. 2 and 6 were OK too.

I've owned a Vetta HD for two years now almost, and lemme tell you guys, it's like owning 20 amps in one! Not only that, it's louder than Hell too; I always hear ppl bitching about how they turn up a Vetta and it comes out crappy; well, when you are creating a tone using a Vetta, you have to create it at the volume level you intended to play it at, in order for the thing to sound right! I have owned a lot of diff. brand amps over the years, and this one is still the hands-down ruler of all, and not only that when Line6 puts out a newer, later version of the amp (i.e. the Vetta II), they allow all Vetta owners to upgrade their software to the latest, greatest version, which is damn near like handing you a new, better amp with even more functionality than you had before! Any other company would make you buy the newer amp head instead, I would wager....

So is this the HD 147 or the Vetta? Sounds pretty killer. I should try one of these out next time I make my way to a guitar shop.
