Lend me your ears, folks...

I took my Charvel USA strat with a hot rails in the bridge into the vetta. I wanted to check out the effects of running cab sims on top of a 'real' cab that had a mic on it. The vetta was running the SLO amp sim, just a tiny bit of reverb, and some compression. That's it. BTW, don't expect this to be a RR tribute... I was just screwing around. I got the main parts, I think.

I also wanted to see if I could record clips at low volumes with the mic that sounded better than the direct outs. Literally, you could hear my mouse click across the room - that's how quiet the amp was and how loud the mic preamp was cranked. I recorded these between 12:30 and 1 am while my wife was asleep in the other room. Which tone do you guys like (if any, go ahead, be honest) and if you do like them, WHY do you like them?

This one has no post eq, and no cab sims.

Same as above, with a presence and bass boost

as above, but V30 marshall 4x12 emulation

see above, but with a fender blackface 2x12 cab emulation

Line 6 4x12 cab emulation here, as above

Thanks for listening ;0

They all sound AWESOME!

But if I were to pick, I like the last 3 the least. Though they're still good sounds that have good uses and interesting character.

I like the first few because they sound clearer to me. the last three sounds more muffled. But then I seem to have a bias towards a brighter sound...

Personally I'd opt for more gain for the leads, but that defeats the purpose of evaluating the amps! The rythms sound awesome!

The only thing I'd change is the player.
LOL just kidding! AWESOME playing!

If I were ranking them:

1. No post eq, SLO 4x12 cab emulation - IMHO the most "alive" sound in the bunch.
2(t). This one has no post eq, and no cab sims.
2(t). No eq/sims with a presence and bass boost
2(t). V30 marshall 4x12 emulation
5. Line 6 4x12 cab emulation here, as above - too midrangy, would work better for a Santana-ish sound.
6. Fender blackface 2x12 cab emulation - too thin for the type of music you were recording.

Thanks guys! I left some on there that didn't really thrill me much either, was curious if everyone else is hearing it the way that I am.

What I'm really happy about is that those clips were recorded VERY quietly... I could have captured a mouse fart if it happened within 20 feet of the mic.

Pete, I like clip 1 the best and clip 6 second. Clip 1 sounds more open and live sounding (like a real amp that is cranked). Clip 6 sounds very similar to clip 1 but with more bottom. Clips 2 thru 5 are too "creamy" sounding (like Santana's tone)and almost have a processed vibe.

Cool. It's pretty amazing how much just changing the cab emulation modifies the tone and even the attack/feel of the amps. Now I'm going to have to get another SM57 or some other mic and do the close mic/room mic thing

Stuck between the SLO & V30 cabs
The blackface doesnt have enough "balls"

Otherwise...dude, your f*ckin' rip!

I think that the SLO model was the closest. Great playing, too.

Pete, are you usung a Vetta combo or the head with a cab? I have the combo and I like it alot but can't seem to get "my" tone from it. I had a great tone but like an idiot I forgot to save and now I can't get it back. I'm hoping that when I finally upgrade the software it will have something a little closer to what I'm looking for so it will be easier to tweak. Oh yeah, I liked the SLO cab sim the best.

(NO!...too dry, too fake sounding)

(oh hell no!)

Do you have the old software (not the II upgrade) loaded? If so... THEN LOAD IT ASAP! Seriously... it makes a huge difference.

One other thing I'd recommend is getting a sealed 2x12 or 4x12 for your overdrives... open back cabs sound like crap for high gain. However, they sound the best for cleans... run your Vetta combo with a sealed 2x12, and route the cleans to the vetta internal speakers and the heavier tones to the sealed cab. You'll be amazed.

the first 3 are soooo close but i would have to say the SLO one sounds the best, very AIR'ish like it was cranked

I should be getting the cable to hook it up to my computer this weekend. The upgrade is that much better? Does it upgrade the way all the amps sound or just add the new amps? As far as adding another 2x12 that would defeat the my purpose for buying the vetta, I needed to take up less space than my old rig(Marshall 1960A with a power amp, ART SGX2000 Express for EQ and some preamp tube warmth, and a GNX3). But if I'm really unhappy with the tones I guess I'll look into a Gflex. Thanx Pete!!!

I vote the Marshall V-30. I think it nails the Randy sound. I just love Marshall old school sounds anyway.
