Re: Mesa .22+...what else is there?

The Pitbull sounds bitchen, but for the next few months at least Mom will be doing my laundry (I think ), and neither she nor Dad quite share the same tastes in metal as I.
Therefore a 50 watt VHT, though right up may alley...well hell, I should have kept the 100 watt JMP head I just (finally!) sold. I'm talking LOW horsepower here.

Also, as I am now wearing Poor shoes, I want to drop about $500 in this whole shebang and be done with it.

I really think I should just watch the bay and score a .22+ with EQ.

Re: Mesa .22+...what else is there?

my Boogie Mark IV is like the perfect practice amp. it sounds great at low volumes, and running it in "class A" and tweed power with EL-34 power tubes is around 18 watts i think. plus you can crank it up later and it'll sound great!! but it took an aeon to tweak (i found to be like a vintage bluesbreaker - it sounds best with the mids cranked and the bass almost all the way off, and the highs almost all the way off...the graphic shapes the overall tone)...but these amps aren't too cheap.
        GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

        and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

Re: Mesa .22+...what else is there?

what you want is the original .50 cal with el-84's

its the next step up from the .22.

4 el-84s instead of 2 or 3. with all the same features.

i have the head and love it. almost bid on a white tolex covered combo but i don't have the money right now.

you will love the .50 cal combo or head. f-ing great!

I stiil don't like it. The only Mesa's that I have ever liked were the Tremoverb and the Subway Blues. The only Rivera I ever head that wasn't awesome was some abused one in a store. The thing is, you need to know how to dial in a Rivera, and I do since I have been playing them for a while. I suppose it could be the same with Mesas. I did once get a great tone out of my studio 22, and then it dissappeared. I didn't change anything and couldn't get it back again. It only happened once though.

Re: Mesa .22+...what else is there?

I had a Studio 22+ and it did get a great rhythm tone with a Les Paul.Especially for recording. The clean wasn't the greatest and the lead tone certainly needed outboard help. I don't see what all the hype is about regarding this Boogie but to each his own. The F30, Subway Blues and the 50 Cal. are all better choices IMHO. Personally I think the Carvin Belair, the Carvin X60B combo, the Soldano Atomic 16 and the Astroverb along with some of the older Marshall tube combos are better. Heck, you can pickup a Carvin MTS3212 for the same price. That is a great amp or sure. I even thought that my Crate VC508,20 and 30 all got great tone (and were all hand made in St. Louis).

What didn't you like about the Soldano Atomic 16? I am kinda looking for a decent combo and I was considering it.

It must not have been that great since you are big fan of Soldanos.

I really wanted to like it, but it just didn't have the smooth gain I looking for. It really needed a pedal to kick it into gear, and I was anti-pedal at the time.
It was just kind of flabby and dead.

Subway blues sounded like a cardboard box to me, Fseries were ok but didn't move me, 50cal w/EL84s was great, but that's just a studio .22with twice the power. The 6L6 50cals sounded hollow to me. Carvin X60B - are you kidding me? Those suck! I played through one when they first came out, wasn't impressed. Saw one at the local MusicGoRound, gave it a spin, sounded like two cats screwing on a trash can lid. Crate VC series had great clean tones, shitty build quality, average overdrives. If those were hand made, then the people who built em had messed up hands.

I have fairly bizarre (sometimes misguided)taste in regards to amps. I really liked the X60B and the X100B. Especially when they were dialed in. I have always thought the best thing about a Studio 22+ was the resale value. You could always get your money back on one. I did think it got outstanding rhythm tone though. Maybe I just didn't give it enough time. I tend to bail out on amps a little too quickly.

Both of you guys REALLY know what you are talking about and this is proof that we all hear things differently and have different expectations of what we want to hear.

Did'ja see the pic of my rig?? I'll post it again...

It looks awesome Chuck. Both the axe and the amp have a certain kind of "synergism"..lol..(spellcheck). The Boogie really looks great with the extension cabinet and the contrast between the cream body and the black cab grills along with the fact that the Charvel has a strathead and of course... the coupe de gras.. the slide that is sitting on the top of the Boogie. Is that how you dial in the amount of bass?? When it rattles and falls off the cabinet the bass is set perfectly.

I generally look for around 4 to 5 inches of movement by the guitar solo in VH's Mean Streets.

                            Jesus dude, that was funny!

Yeah, different strokes for different folks and all that. I've owned many many amps, and the Rivera was a big disapointment. It sounded 'ok' but nothing amazing. Certainly not up to the hype that I had heard. Construction was top notch, I took it apart and checked it out. If all I wanted was loud clean fender tones, I would have liked it a lot more. The overdrives were fairly low gain and not so good imho. I also made sure it was biased properly and swapped the preamp and poweramp tubes - didn't help much either.

Well, I swung a deal last night and got an older .22 and a 1x12 extension cab, both loaded with Celestion Greenbacks.

I'm not sure if I like the greenbacks or not, but I'm digging the amp!
Like someone said, ya just gotta know how to tweak them. I'd kill for a Mark IV!!
