Haven't wired it yet, but mounted all the components in the chassis... have a look!

The lacewood front hasn't been permanently attached, so it's at a bit of an angle. Haven't installed the handle and feet for the cab, or final buffed it, etc... kinda rough still, but pretty cool.

One thing in the pic that is kinda weird is the way the lacewood has one 'brighter' side - it's not that way in real life, just the way the flash hits it. Lacewood is kinda like maple in that it has this kooky 3D depth to it. The enclosure is cherry-stained pine. Should have it finished by early next week... I have a rackmount power amp to build that takes precedence when all the parts get here.

Very nice Pete, I love the vintage style. May I ask how you're going to label each control?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Thanks. Some sort of custom faceplate. Right now, it has a high and low input, preamp gain, tone, and a master volume. It's a VERY simple amp, and guys who dig Uberschalls would likely hate it. I made sure and left room for other controls and goodies inside the amp so as I mutate/change/evolve it, I have room and can use the same chassis.

cool amp Pete, but I think you need a gallon of Visine for that front.

                  How about some gut shots?

No, wiring isn't done... taking a break for the night I think. I do have the heaters done, power supply, and about 75% of the power tube wiring done.

Here's another gut shot... I'm goin to bed. Almost done wiring it. I'm getting tired enough that I'll probably screw something up if I try and finish tonight, and when you're talking about 450 or so volts, it's better to get some rest.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">2xEL84 power tubes, cathode biased, 2 12ax7 preamp tubes, volume/tone/master volume controls. Not a high gain shred amp, but more of a hotrodded blues kinda thing. I'll have clips of it soon, I finished it this morning. After I do clips, I'll probably mod it a bit more before I call it done. Right now it's basically a Matchless Spitfire with a slightly hotrodded power section.

Pete, what's your comment/opinion on using a tube rectifier versus a semiconductor type - sound-wise?

I think i spot a tube rectifier in your lacewood beauty, right?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">using semiconductors gets you more voltage and less sag when the amp is cranked. the ranges for rectified voltage go from a high of x1.4 for semiconductor/diodes to a low of 1.13 for 5Y3GTs. Other rectifier tubes fall into those extremes. an example... let's say you have a transformer that is rated at 250-0-250. Solid state rectification would get you 350 volts off the rectifier. A 5Y3GT tube rectifier would get you
282 or so. That's a pretty big difference. Plus if you use a tube rectifier, depending on the specs you can sometimes substitute different rectifiers in the circuit to get different voltages to the amp. This is safer than using a variac, because you're only affecting the B+, not the heater voltages too. You may need to rebias, however, depending on how much current you drop.
