That last post made my head hurt...

How much does something like that run a spareass like me?

Looks nice, bet it sounds killer. I'd love an amp like that, slightly bluesy at lower volume but with a bit more gain so I could get a nice Primus type tone

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Here's the condensed version: Tube rectifiers are saggier, which means they give more compression to the note when the amp is cranked. They also aren't as efficient at converting the wall voltage (which is AC) to DC, which is what the tubes want. So you lose some voltage/power. Solid state rectifiers are more effecient, so you get more voltage and less sag.

And then you can substitute some rectifier tubes for each other, and adjust the amount of sag/voltage drop.

I'm posting some sound clips in a new thread... and another pic of it 'alive'. Pricing for building another one would probably be in the $700ish range. I'm still tweaking this one, any improvements I made would go into any I built.

That made no sense to me, sounds cool though. Guess I should take a crash course in valve amps considering I'm getting one soon.

          Anyone care to teach me??

Twister, what is amp building like, I'd love to get into it at some point.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yes, that's a big difference. You didn't elaborate on your preferred rectifier design regarding sound, but seeing that you use a tube for it in this amp, maybe you like that sound better?

The only tube rectifier amp i have owned was an old AC30 with blue bulldog speakers and it got very compressed when cranked - it completely changed character. Good for certain things but it lost definition in the bass, so maybe that is part of the characteristics of a tube rectifier design compared to a semiconductor one.

It's pretty easy to add solid state rectification to one that uses tubes pretty easily, but not so easy to take a solid state recto amp and add a tube to it. It's all good tho.

Looks killer Pete. Must be pretty satisfying being able to make your very own amps to your tastes and purposes.

Sweet looking amp Pete. Can't wait to hear your MP3's. Any chance a high gain twister amps head is in the near future? I bet something EL84 based like the one you have there with a few more gain stages that have some Mullard 12ax7's would sound sweet as all hell.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yeah, I have a rackmount power amp to finish up for a JCF member first... sent him a pic of all the outside components mounted (did it to figure out turret board sizing and placement) - after that's done, my next amp will be a higher gain amp. Not Uberschall territory, more like an old school JCM800 with a little more boost. I'm still debating on whether to go with 2xEL84 or switchable power tubes in Class A.
