• Where next?

So I'm going to start playing out on a regular basis now. I have a good guitar, and a good half stack. From you guys who have been down the road before, what do you think I should, as a guitarist, add to my rig next?

A tuner and good cables.

Re: Where next?

Boxcar's got it right - in this day and age, the least professional thing you can do is be tuning to each other at full stage volume. Nothing makes me lose respect for a band faster.

Hyper-accurate quartz tuners are $30, for cryin' out loud!

Good cables can make a difference, but I wouldn't be dropping the cash for Monster 1000 stuff unless you're a SERIOUS tone freak - the soundman's just gonna mess it up anyway.

Of course, you can spend literally thousands of dollars just on accessories...

Great technique?

I've been on a gear buying spree myself lately and I'm starting to think it's silly. You end up spending more time obsessing on whether or not your gear is good or what you need next than actually playing the guitar. The most important thing you can add to your "rig" is practice. You can still sound great on crappy gear if you're a good player, but you won't sound good on great gear if you're not.

Yeah yeah, but I have no problems with my technique at the moment.

Ah, screw it.

Don't get offended dude, I've never heard you play. I just think alot of players obsess over gear rather than than worrying about the most important thing you can do, which is practicing.

Sounds like you got everything you need, rock it out!

No worries man

What I mean is, aside from the obvious stuff already mentioned, what will other people in a working band and venue expect me to have?

Do you have any pedals? It's always a good idea to have some extra batteries, even if you have a snake. In my experience, AC adapters & snakes are much less reliable than a good old 9V battery. Make sure you've got a spare set of strings, and even better, a back-up guitar. Don't forget your tool kit!!!!

there is only ONE necessity for a band, period!...

GOOD SONGS!

you can play it through a 8" combo, with Fisher-Price cymbols and it will be a better show than most bands play using the highest end, most expensive equipment.

the last thing you should worry about is what kind of Gear your audience Expects to see you playing through.

A very important peice of equipment to carry with you along with your screwdrivers, needle nose, wire cutters, strings and spare cables of all kinds.
A FREAKIN FLASHLIGHT!!!!!
I don't know how many times I got stuck out there on a dark stage trin' to peer into the back of my rack or head trying to chase down a wiring or electrical problem. The back of an amp head isn't too bad. If you're a smoker you can always use your lighter in a pinch. But racks are often deep and it's like peering into a black hole of the universe
I finally got one solely dedicated to the guitar tool bag I just have to remember to keep spare batteriies for it along with the nine volts.
